I could have bought a black/black egear at *slightly* under list this week. No interest.

A one time occurrence (this publication's best recorded time) is no substitute for decades of racing and consistant podium finishes. Until the R8 continually proves itself in endurance events, I am unimpressed. Audi is a great company and they recently have become a serious racing competitor, however not with the R8 or any variant of such, not even with a similar engine. My money goes to Porsche...GT3 all the way baby! Hell, I would own an RSR if I thought I could convience the wife that I needed one! I have to agree that the RS8 will be better than the R8, but I would still rather have the GT3...call me crazy, but it's just such a blast to drive on the track. Somebody on this forum surely owns both, why don't we just ask them which they prefer and why?

good Lord some of you guys are really hard up on the GT3. im not trying to say the R8 is faster or better in any way but you cant say comparing it to a GT3 is "offensive", if it is possible for them to run similar times on a track they are in same league IMO. i dont even really like the R8 (i dont like AWD cars) so i am done defending it. have a nice day

I never said it was offensive, just that he should keep his GT3.

i was referring to the times i posted on page 2 of this thread.

btw the updated 997 GT3 time is 7:48 - Porsche 997 GT3, 415 PS/1440 kg (sport auto 07/06) and i have read before 7:55 for an R8. (dont have a link but google it and im sure it will pop up).

my point is that you cant say its "offensive" to compare the two, they are in the same league whether you like it or not. have you had any seat time in the R8 to be so against it or are you just bench racing like the rest of us? im a car enthusiast, not a brand enthusiast so its refreshing to see any manufacturer come close to competing against porsche dominance. if you are a true enthusiast you can appreciate where im coming from.

My vote is for the GT3 because it is track tested and can survive sustained hard use. I have not driven the R8 or any Audi for that matter. The R8 will be like all other cars that have great initial performance and new factor but it will never compete with a car developed and honed for 40+years to continue its dominance on the track and now can be comfortably driven on the streets.

although the R8 is one sexy beast, the GT3 is more of a commanding car and I think the driving experience will be phenomenonally different (as in the GT3 is probably more of a driver's car) so GT3!

If you're concerned about the "wow" factor, go R8. Non-car enthusiasts can't tell the difference between a 2s,4s, gt3...whatever. So if u want people to drop what they're doing and gawk at your car, go R8.

R8 is nice, but GT3 is amazing.

I did not count up all the votes but as I would have guessed the GT3 seems to win hands down

I'm going to take delivery of the GT3 and will post some pics when I get the car. Looks like I will be keeping the ride for "now"

Thanks for posting that video on the R8, I can't imagine ever driving one of these cars that hard but it sure does look like fun. I envy those of you who not only get to own these supercars but also get to race them on the track. Mine will never see the track I'm pretty sure of that so it will just be a more of a touring / street car at most.

Appreciate all the posts, guess the R8 will have to wait for the new V10 bi-turbo motor before it will be a contender.

SWATdoc brings up a good point, anyone on this forum own both cars and would like to chime in here?

Wow factor: Definitely the R8 but what would you guys rather have in your garage assuming only one car....(this car is my weekend toy so just want something that is fun to drive)

Speed is not the most important thing to me so don't really care which one handles better at the track, etc since this thing will only see highway driving mostly....

Opinions welcome!

Rick it sounds as though you answered your own question. If Track use and max speed are less important than fun to drive on weekends, then get the R8.
