LWFW in OC

So MY07 Gt3 has an RMS leak. Saw a few drops of oil on ground. Talked to Newport Porsche and they said they could do it but they did not recommend it for a daily driver because it makes an annoying noise at idle. I am looking for someone with an GT3RS or has a GT3 LWFW installed that lives in OC so I can listen to the presumed chatter and decide whether to go forward. Can anyone help me out?

FYI car has 5k miles. They said it would be an additional hour of labor for the install, the rest would be covered under RMS repair The quoted a rough $2500 for the parts and said as long as they are porsche parts it would not affect the warranty.

Dr. Peter,

I had the same issue at about the same miles on my 07 GT3, I bought the LWFW kit from Alex at Sharkwerks and had it installed by my local dealer when they fixed the RMS. The LWFW from Alex was less than what your dealer quoted. check it out at:

http://www.sharkwerks.com/products.php?pid=154

My local dealer installed it at the same time as the RMS fix at NO additional cost. You should not have to pay extra to have the LWFW installed if they are performing the RMS repair. You will find no major difference in the sound with the LWFW, but you will notice the engine more "alive" and rev happy.

Doc, I did the LWFW on my 996 GT3 and it was maybe 3 or 4 months later before I even noticed the chatter. Extra Noise on the GT3 is kind of down in the Noise pardon the pun.

The chatter is definitely noticible -- at least on my car anyway. I noticed it immeadiately after having the LWFW inststalled. Having said that, it's well worth doing IMO as the throttle respose on down ****s is much improved and the chatter is just one more noise amongst many. Every so often if it does annoy me (sometimes it's more noticible than others and I might be having a conversation) I simply press the clutch pedal to make it go away.

Definitely worth checking out in advance if you're thinking a little extra noise might bother you. Like you, I knew about the chatter in advance of my decision but the car's already so loud I didn't see the point of getting concerned over another little sound. For me, it was a good call.

Btw, one more thing, here's a video link that does a good job of demonstrating the chatter. It's in a 996TT, but still very similar to what you can expect w/ your car. I found this link before making my decision and found it helpful. After the job was done, there were no suprises -- it was as I expected based on this video.

P.S. Thanks to whoever the person is for posting.

I have a LWFW on my regular carrera and it does chatter but not noticable unless I open my door to listen. However when the A/C is on, the chatter is MUCH louder.

Hi Peter

I install GMG's LWFW my GT2. Some mfg's make more noise than other. The GMG LWFW is VERY quite by comparison. I don't really notice a lot of noise and besides it's only at idle. The difference in acceleration is VERY noticable. You GT3 owners need all the help you can get with low end torque

If Newport won't install what you want send me an e-mail and I will give you the name of another local Porsche Dealer who also supports PCA/OCR who I think will.

Newport Beah Porsche installed my triple disk carbon clutch. The only problem is that they are very expensive. Others will do the job for 1/2 the price. Since my p-car is still under warranty, I stayed with the dealership.

Respectfully, I think it's a stretch to say the difference in acceleration is very noticeable from the addition of a LWFW; especially on a GT2 that's got gobs of low-end torque. On my GT3, it's was hard for me to tell a real difference in acceleration although there's obviously some benefit from the reduction in rotating mass. The main benefit to be had is much improved throttle response on downshifts and, perhaps, some noticeable acceleration improvement the lower gears where the engine accelerates much more quickly. I wouldn’t recommend somebody spend the money on a LWFW if all they're after is faster acceleration.

Also, it’s not as though one LWFW is quieter relative to another, etc. It’s the gearbox that’s making the noise, presumably due to the decreased damping characteristics of the lighter flywheel. And thus, it stands to reason that a lighter flywheel = more noise.
And, as a reminder to folks retrofitting a LWFW, don't forget to get the proper pulley on the other end!
