Need technical help on '04 GT3 tires!!!

I wanted to try Hoosiers for my 2004 GT3 track tires. They sold me 245/40/18 (only size that is close...+10MM OD) and 315/30/18 rears.

The fronts rub on the inside fender liners when I turn over 20 degrees and the rears...maybe there is 1/2" clearance between the top of the tire and fender.

I was supposed to track tomorrow. I guess that isn't happening!

Do I assume Hoosiers do not fit this car? Tire Rack says they do!

Need advice!

Karl

-1.75 in the front

I am worried about the rears as well....if I corner hard, they are going to rub against the metal fender.

Thank you for the help. Yes....i agree with you on the sizes. So if I understand you, they just let the tires rub?

I called a race garage in town....they say there are several GT3s with the larger Hoosiers.

if those are slicks you are not going to get enough heat into the tires for them to perform properly with that camber setting

They are not the race slicks. They have the 2 channels running around the tread.

The setting was for the Sport Cup ties and temps were perfect...for my track. I was going to see how these heated up then go from there.

I am going to pull them and send them back.

the lower profile front and narrower rear suggested by Alan should help with the rubbing except for extreme bumps/steering

I would if Hoosier made the stock OEM size! This is why I went with the larger tire. I asked the guy who sold them to me if they would rub and he said no way. Then I hear other are running this size. I'll just go back to Michelin so I can get the stock size.

1. you can run 245/40 or 245/35 up front, though the 35 series is the preferred set up
2. you can run 295 or 315 rear, if you run 12" rear (yes, 12" will fit, i have 3 sets of 12" wheels for my 996gt3), 315 is the preferred choice. if you run 11" rear, then you should do 295, otherwise the 315 is not spread wide enough on the rim.
3. 315 will rub the lip of rear bumper and top of inside fender, very very little, i have 3 deg of camber at the back
4. the front shouldn't rub with either tire unless you are at full lock. however, you have way way too little camber for hoosiers. if you get even wear on track with less than 2deg of camber, you aren't pushing the car hard enough to run hoosiers. most run 2.5 or more up front with hoosiers.

i would have alignment re-dialed and some rubbing is fine.

Thank you for the feedback. I am running stock rims, so I will assume that they are 11". I jacked the car up and the fronts rubbed well before full lock. I tossed on the OEM front tire and the clearance was maybe 2mm, probably less. The big issue was the plastic fasteners that hold on the fender liners.

I have ripped the liners off on race cars, so I think that I will get another set of Sport Cups, which are the stock size.

When setting up the car with the Michelins, I started with -2.5 in the front and the temps were not correct. I was pushing pretty hard...at the the time of testing I was told that for a stock car, it was the lap record for the track. Once I backed off the camber in front, she hooked up great and was faster.

I was looking forward to setting up the Hoosiers. Side note: when corner balancing the car, we lowered it a bit. No other changes. Maybe I have different liners on my car.

yes, stock rear = 11"
i thnk with slightly more camber, your front will clear until full lock, if you run 35 series.

perhaps your track is different than CA. most of the GT3 guys here run 2.5 to 2.75 of front camber with hoosiers and mpsc. but dont mind me. if your pyrometer says the temp is off, you sould trust it and dial in the needed camber for correct temp for your driving style and track conditions.

good luck, you will like hoosiers. they are like drugs.

Hoosier R6 on 996 GT3

I own a 2004 GT3.
(a) the stock rims are 8.5" in front and 10.5" in the rear.
(b) I have run 245/35/18's in front and 295/30/18's in the rear using 5mm spacers on Forgeline wheels that are the stock widths.
(c) I tried 315's with the spacers in the rear and they did rub, so I removed and they worked fine.
(d) I prefer to use Viper Racing League front tires on my rear which are close to 305. I get VRL front takeoffs for $75 each that usually only have two or three run sessions on them. They work great and last almost as long as new tires.
(e) I currently am using Pirelli slicks, which are noticeably stickier that Hoosier R6's.
Hope that helps.

OEM rear 996gt3 wheels are 11" for certain both by spec sheet and by me measuring my wheels.
