Delete wing?

Assuming I can find a dealer to deal with in San Diego, since both Hoehn and Pioneer seems to be having some 'ethical problems' lately. Can I replace the wing on a 997GT3 with something less conspicuous? Or I am stuck with it?

not without upsetting the balance of the car...that rear wing is an integral part of the aerodynamics...the only wing close would be the RS wing and that is hardly "less conspicuous"....in a word...."stuck"

might i ask why you want to delete the wing. I am sure you can sell it and get something else...but i just am woundering why you would want to do that

if you care more about the look of the 997 GT3 than it's performance at speed...why don't you just get a Carrera S...great car and you won't have a wing to look at...

You could, but you'd have to balance it with a standard 911 front end as well.

It shouldn't be a problem. If you're tracking or doing a lot of high-speed driving, then I'd put it back on, but for cruising around on the street it'll be alright.

What about an after market piece like something from RINSPEED, RUF, or TechArt. I sort of like the idea and I think a lot of people would agree once they saw it in person.

Given the amount of downforce the front of the GT3 generates, I would imagine the car would be very dangerous at speed without at least a similar wing to what came with it from the factory.
Chuck has a good point, perhaps a Carrera S would be a better choice.

Is the GT3 RS wing less conspicuous? It should work

I agree with the group... I wouldn't really mess with what a couple hundred German engineers did when designing the GT3... For that price the 997 TT will be just as quick and without the big phat wing on the back.

Mike has a point. The wing on the GT3 is hideous especially for street driving. The car looks like it made a wrong turn while on a track and ended up on a public street. Ricers have wings but a $100,000+ perf. street car should not. That is why there are wind tunnels.

Why don't you go with the MK1 GT3 Wing? The downforce #'s must be pretty close to the MKII version, and it looks more organic and less edgy. The 997 GT3 has gone back to this style too.

I don't know if I agree with that assessment.

GT3s are road worth track versions of the 997, so naturally they will come with that wing. I think there are plenty of options you can go with that will omit the large shopping car wing.

The only difference between the ricers and the actual GT3 is that the GT3 wing was designed to be functional, not for looks

I almost got a GT3, but decided that driving around San Francisco with the big wing on the back would be silly at best, and embarrasing at worst. Got the 997 4S and modded it with track tires & wheels, suspension, more hp. It's looks very tasteful and regularly passes TT's at the track.

I will admit, however, that I do lust for the purity and performance of the GT3, so I feel for you on the aesthetic issue. You might buy an extra rear deck and hack off the wing, and swap them out for street and track use. Anything can be done with enough $.
