Drove a GT3 tonight

I met up with Oldguy and drove his new GT Silver 997GT3! What a ride! I'm not a fan of the alcantra steering wheel and shifter though. It felt slippery, fuzzy and wierd, not sure I could live with that. The clutch is a LOT stiffer and it scrapes all over the place. (sorry Paul! ). Overall, the look, sounds, feel, driving dynamics, it's what a Porsche should be!

Yup, I was a little surprised myself. I would assume that it's grippy with gloves on for track use but with bare hands, it feels slippery.

Cause I was thinking of getting my steering wheel wrapped with shifter and hand brake, then I was going to do my whole dash

I'm glad to hear he decided to go get another GT3. Do you know if he was able to sell his red 996 GT3? Or does he still have it for sale?

Dante-I sold it otherwise I would have been divorced and penniless. But I have to agree with 2th. I dont like the wheel or shifter as much as the thickerer wheel and the carbon aluminum shifter on my 996. It does scrape everywhere but its not like the 996 that would hit and come off- the 997 just scrapes .
Other than that its great. I dont know that its much faster than my Manthey
BUT it is more comfortable for my back!!!

Sweet Paul, great to hear you are enjoying your new 3! Did you get all the carbon/painted goodies like you had on your 996?

The steering wheel is an easy upgrade; funny- I prefer the shifter I had in my 997 over my 996. The entire gearbox as a whole is slightly more vague, plus I like the feel of the **** better. To each his own I guess!

Gotta hookup one of these days, would love to check out your new 3. Porsche Parade maybe? I' plan on attending the Porsche Paddock on July 2nd.

Congrats again, enjoy it!

The **** is the same as my 997S, it's really the alcantra that is the problem. The best way to describe is to compare it to a super soft short terry cloth towel. No grippiness at all with bare hands. IMO a minor detail on an otherwise perfect machine.

Ah I see, got your drift 2th,

I bet if you put on a pair of proper driving gloves (suede palms/fingers) that would solve that issue

My experience (limited as it is) is that suede on suede contact provides great if not superior contact. Given that the 3 is designed for tracking, makes sense (to me) that alcantara material is used in those locations.

Can others here verify if what I am saying holds water, or am I just talking out of my ****? My kart wheel for instance was suede and with bare hands felt non-condusive to the rigors of karting, but with the gloves felt just right. Great tactile feel with NO slippage.
