2012 MB CLS63 AMG vs. PANAMERA TT

I'm considering putting down a deposit for the new 2012 MB CLS63 AMG due to be released next summer. I love my Panamera S handling and fun factor but, I find it to be somewhat underpowered. It's hard for me to justify the premium for the Panamera TT in comparison to the CLS63. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Having not owned but only have driven these cars. I can say that the PTT is around .7seconds faster to 60 (per the magazine articles) and it feels like it. I know the new TT engine for the amg has not been reviewed on this car yet but on other models it still is not below 4 seconds to 60 and the PTT did a 3.3 to 60 and 11 flat in the 1/4mile. Before you say it does not matter, for me the thrill of driving is the feel of acceleration. And comparing cars that have greater then a .5second difference is enormous in the fun department.
I assume the handling would be better in the PTT if you get PDCC and PTV. Then the interior room is definitely more. For its looks that is purely subjective, I love the look of both. Around here I will see many more CL then PTT. Great problem to have, either one is great!

Why take a step down? The MB will be a luxo-barge in comparison. Get a turbo and lay waste to all the AMG63s.

AMG’s new twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter with the optional Performance Package, max boost 18.8 psi, with power ratings of 550 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque - up from 507 hp and 465 lb-ft produced by the old naturally aspirated 6.2 liter. Will also have the seven-speed Speedshift automatic with "Race Start" launch mode. Will definitely go 0 to 60 mph in sub 4.0.

The CL65, S65 and SL65 are not sub 4.0 cars, and they have well over 600HP and something in the 700 for tq. These cars cant get the traction.
Still fabulous cars but not something I would take over a PTT.

also...remember that MB is still using a torque converter-less slushbox transmission.

All fair points regarding transmission and traction concern. FYI - the CL63 and S63 make 563/664 with the Performance Package.

But, stepping up from my Panamera S, is the price differential of the Panamera TT over the CLS63 worth it given the new 5.5 liter engine and hopefully improved transmission/traction?

I was trying to remember a ballpark number, guess I was off on those figures.

....say it ain't so Rich! Maybe it's the 22s zapping your power? Dibs on the P40s if you decide to sell seperately!

Had a CLK63 Black Series and can tell you first hand the AMG cars are torque monsters and stomping the throttle will get you a smoky burnout everytime! Certainly different than our Panameras.

IMHO, the CLS63 will be a lot of car for the $ compared to the PTT I'm just not sure about the new look until I see it in person (Gee, where have we heard that one b/f???? )

Dr Chill is infamous around these parts
65 Series AMG vehicles have 621 hp @4800 rpm, 738 lb-ft torque @2000-4000 rpm.

After having 2 MB AMG cars, I can say if you value getting on and off exit ramps at high speed, the Porsche is far superior, as is the interior quality and ergonomics of the Panamera. If Panamera S acceleration is insufficient, I'd upgrade to a used low mileage PTT (closer in cost to new CLS63 with PP). Also, MB AMG cars have horrible resale value.

Right there with you Rich. I had great experiences with several AMG's before the PannyS, but I just couldnt justify the $30+ premium for the TT to end up with the same king of torque and slightly more performance, and have ended up really disappointed with the power of the Panny.

Have not seen the new CLS63TT in person, only pics, but it does look gorgeous and to get that sort of performance for the same price as a Panny S ....... seems to be a no-brainer. I suspect that if it had been out when I got my Panny, I am sure I would have taken the AMG .

Tough decision for you

Yes, you are referring to the 6.0 Liter, V12, Biturbo.

That's exactly my sentiment! It is a tough decision for me but, I will most likely put down the deposit next week. I agree, it does look gorgeous in pics. but, still need to see it in person. Thanks.

Hey LRDog, It hopefully will be a lot of car for $ compared to the PTT - still waiting for official pricing. I really enjoy everything else about my S except for the power. In hindsight I should have purchased the TT. But, since I didn't, I'm now faced with a difficult decision. Definitely leaning toward putting down a deposit on the CLS63 next week.

I'll certainly let you know what I eventually decide and of course you'll have first dibs on the P40's if I decide to sell.
