P3081 - Coolant Temp Sensor?

Hey all,

I've had a coolant temp sensor code thrown twice in the last 2 weeks. Anyone have any issues with the coolant temp sensor? Is it hard to switch out?

Do you mean the thermostat ? It sits in the thermostat housing, somewhere under the manifold in the V section of your engine.
I am about to swap out my thermostat housing since i do not want to wonder whether my epoxyd coolant pipes will ever let go and cause engine damage. The stealership wanted 3K$ for this 10 hour job. I just bought the parts (300$ ish) and wil do the install myself as I also address other engine bay maintenance such as spark plugs etc... I can send you the list of parts needed in case you're interested. Aside from the housing + thermostat there's a whole bunch of gaskets that will need replacement as you are making your way to the thermostat....

You'll be needing to replace the thermostat and housing which has the sensor in it and a good idea to do if you are bulding up for more HP... And Yves is spot on, the parts about $300-ish and can easily be done DIY.... However, really consider too at this juncture if you need to replace the serpentine belt, belt tensioner(common wear problem), and idler pulley too to save you on a lot of cash later on...

Which will also require a full on System Fill and flush with Deionized Water(2Gallons), some slick hose connector clamp removers to remove the upper radiator hose(to get the coolant out of the block without needing bleed through PIWIS). I highly recommend refilling with Motul Inugel Expert Ultra Coolant concentrate, the 970 TT's respond really well to this coolant make up. Keeps the engine much cooler.

I'll be doing a DIY when i get the time, but for the time being if you decide to do it, there are two effective ways to get it done...... 1) The Fancy way- using a vacuum system and fill 2) Popping off the lower radiator hoses, have two buckets, and use clean blown air and blow through the coolant overflow tank... it'll push the rest of the fluid out of the block... Once you got everything out, fill the system with Deionized water(2 gal) and drain out the same way after you get the engine going to cycle through... After that, drain everything out again and reconnect the lower hoses. At this juncture, to fill with new coolant, disconnect the two radiator hoses going from the radiator into the engine block. Fill from there on both sides as best as you can, connect hoses, and then go over to overflow tank and pull up on the bleeder tab and fill with more coolant.... turn on engine with radiator cap off and let the coolant cycle and burp for 5 minutes... Oh, make sure you turn on heater in the car and turn up the temp to max setting so that the coolant can get through the heater core. You are manually doing what you would do in PIWIS in this method.

I forgot to mention, make sure you set the heater to max before you do all of the draining to make it easier for the heater block to drain too..

I actually just had the thermostat housing replaced by dealer at a large cosg to my wallet because when researching, it looked like a massive job. I had no idea there were so many other pieces in the same area that could benefit from being done - I see my winter project ahead 😂

Did it end up being the coolant sensor? I think I have the same issue

The issue came up 6 months after I had the housing replaced (sorry, I didn't explain properly lol). I am taking it into my dealer on Feb 9th and letting them get at it but it looks like it's the sensor when they did a quick evaluation. I have an extended warranty so letting them foot the bill and get it done by the dealer.

I'll let you know how it goes!

The housing part does not include the thermostat, sadly, that I'm aware. Do you know if they replaced both housing and thermostat?

I got a whole bunch of parts Alex recommended but missed the thermostat housing, I guess good idea to replace the thermostat, and now I see serpentine belt and tensioner. Drooling at a Chinese PIWIS 3 clone now...

Sigh...
