Chipwerke Piggy Back Tune vs Full ECU Tune : Draggy & Track Results

Hey fellow Panamera owners, I wanted to create this living thread about my experience adding the Chipwerke piggy back tune vs a full ECU tune on my Gen 1 Panamera Turbo. The initial posts will be about the piggy back tune and within the next 2 weeks I will be changing for a ECU Flash tune.

Chipwerke : I recieved the unit about 4 days ago and immediately set out to install it. Unfortunately there were no instructions in the box but after a quick call to the company, they sent me a pic diagram.
Installation was easy and straightforward taking about 15 mins and that's including figuring out where to mount it.
I left the key to the car far away from it in hope's of a ECU reset, which seem to work.

I set out to drive the car normally and everything felt fine initially. Then I decided to do a pull from 50 mph and the revs shot up like the PDK was slipping. It scared me but I said let me drive some more to let it learn. So after another 25 miles I put the car in sport mode and did another pull, this time it was alot better but there still seem to be some slip. I went home and did some research and learned how closely matched the PDK tuning is to the factory ECU programming. In efforts to have smooth shifts and power delivery, Porsche programs in a little virtual slip that cannot be detected at the stock power level. Due to the nature of how a piggy back works, the tranny tune is not matched to what the ECU is doing and creates some issues, but we will get back to that.

I went back out later that night and put the car in sport plus mode and tried again. For the first time my Panamera scared me a little with how much faster it felt. The more I drove the more the computers adjusted and the FASTER it got. It seems I found the work around, which is putting the car in sport plus which is the PDK most aggressive shifting thus no slip. In addition to the speed, the exhaust (catless downpipes) now gives the loudest pops and bangs and I love it.

There are some negatives still though. In normal driving modes the PDK seems confused on what to do with the extra boost. At times its jerky, it serges and confused about what gear to be in. Put the car in sport or sport plus mode and most of it all goes away.

***UPDATE****
I did the PDK reset procedure posted above and man what a difference. The shifts are sharp and crisp and drivability increased greatly but still has some slight hiccups in normal driving mode.

The benefits : Lots of added power, under $600 bucks, pops and bangs from the exhaust, easy to install

Attached are my best Performance data metrics so far which show the additional power added:

0-60 = 3.4 sec

1/4 Mile = 11.3 secs @ 121mph

60 - 130 = 9.1 secs

These are numbers on the street which is a non-prepped surface. I suspect that when I visit the drag strip we will see a 0-60 in 3.2 sec and a 1/4 mile in 11.2 secs with nothing but a piggy back, catless downpipes, and a BMC filter 😳. I'm going to the drag strip tomorrow if open.

Full ECU tune coming in approx 2 weeks.......

Great write up. Was considering this as well for a little bump without shelling out 1K+ for a tune. If you do a dyno, I would be interested in the baseline vs. the tune.

Did you buy the 500 hp version or the 519?

Thanks or sharing. How much HP do you think your car puts out now? Do you have other mods?

I would think you would dyno mid to high 400s to the wheel with that setup, not sure if your chip is more or less aggressive than a flash based on mods. What part of NJ are you in? Would be going to Atco this Sunday the 24th as well

When you add the chip, you need to clear out the learning on the PDK using the manual reset method. This will allow the PDK to learn with the new power bands in place. Should help avoid those slips.

I have a Gen 1 with sport chrono so that's 500 hp and 516 tq.

I will not be dynoing the car anytime soon but based on the Performance results it's making alot more power. For reference my fastest ever time I ran on the track was 11.9 at 117mph.

If atco is open this Tuesday I will be there, if not I'll go on Sunday. I'll post here either way.

Your times might be a little skewed since you’ve switched your wheels from 22’s to stock 20’s...unless the new times are on your 22’s also

My times after tire change but before chip install so down pipes and filter only:

0-60 : 3.7
1/4 Mile : 11.8

So you are right I shaved time with the wheel change but the piggy back pushed it that much further. I was impressed to say the least

I am using the draggy which is a GPS unit that works with an app on your phone. I highly recommend it.

Yea bro I just bought one, I’ve been watching the YouTube video, I highly suggest everyone check them out. That chip seems like you got really good results I have the fvd and from the draggy app yours is faster than mine (less than .1) I’m sure there is a difference In DA but awesome tune for half the price of the FVD.

Yes Mike you are right DA plays a major part in that time. It was really low but what was your MPH at 11.4?
