DIY Emergency Hood release

I use my hood release a lot, every time I get home I park the car in the garage and pop the hood to help dissipate heat.
There are a couple threads around where someones hood release cable or handle has failed and asking for help, the location of the hood catch makes it a nightmare to get too if you can't open the hood.
another member told me they had done this so I figured I'd do it and make small write up.

this is what makes this DIY possible - the VW part use for our cars has a little "hook" where you can attach another cable

You'll need to pull your bumper to get access to all the areas you'll be working in

I made a cable stop by drilling thru a 10/24 hex head bolt
I ended up trimming off the big cap and putting a smaller one on it, the larger cap tended to get hung up and fail.

I had originally tried to use a choke cable, but it turned out to be too stiff - the main hood release couldn't push it down, luckily I tested that before closing the hood!!

I ended up using a bicycle brake cable - nice and flexible, because I no longer had a cable housing to guide it I had to change where I was going to have it end, original idea was passenger side behind the wheel well so I could easily pop a couple screws and reach it.

brought it straight down and out the front

Trimmed it down a bit, put a cap on it and tucked it up out of the way, will have to see if it will stay there by itself or will it require some other fastener aka zip tie

tested it a couple times and so far so good

Thank you. Recently ours started trying to "bite" me. Hood struts are on order with a local dealer....

Thanks DogWood. I should really do this too. I also pop the hood to help dissipate heat and since day one, the hood lever has always felt like a sponge. Not as crisp and responsive, likely to fail one day.

Hi,

im a noob here that’s working on unlocking the latch for my panamera at the moment. The cable came off the latch.

id like to perform this DIY, but am not understanding where to tie the bike cable to what you drilled to make a cable stop. Do you mind explaining this for me ?

thank you!

Sorry, was at Rennsport Reunion , but if I understand your question, you need to drill a hole thru the 10/24 bolt, you then thread the cable thru the hole and use a locknut to hold the cable in place.
the other option would to be bending the cable into a small loop and crimping the cable to keep it that way.

if you look at the first picture you can see that the latch has a arm with a C shaped hole, which is perfect for the 10/24 bolt.

in the third picture I'm holding the latch mechanism upside down and you can see the cable coming out of what would be the bottom when installed properly

does that help?

Perhaps the most secure system I have encountered implemented on the Panamera, thank you for sharing this Dog Wood.
