Brake pads
Brake pads
It’s about time to replace my brake pads again and I was leaning towards a ceramic compound to alleviate dusting on my wheels. I’ve been searching for them on most of the popular sites ( pelican, ecs, Partsgeek etc) but can’t seem to find both front and rears by the same vendor. Do any of you use ceramics?, if so which brand and source of purchase would be helpful. Also, what is your experience with them performance wise. Thanks.
A good site to research brake pads is www.tirerack.com. Whatever you decide to use I don't think there will be a large variance between brands/compounds with normal everyday driving. But if you are doing autocross or tracking your Porsche, then brake pad choices are more important. In such cases I would start comparisons with OEM Porsche pads ( very expensive).
No one "likes" brake dust. No doubt that ceramic pads help reduce brake dust. Something else to consider is "ceramic" on your wheels. I use Avalon ceramic coating and it greatly reduces brake dust.

I ended up putting Hawk ceramic pads on the front, I haven’t replaced the rears as yet but so,far I like them. The braking seems to be similar or maybe even better than the OEM pads but can’t remember exactly how the OEM pads were when they were new.
Any new pads take time to bed in. So switching to ceramics people often complain that they don't stop as well. This is usually a lack of initial bite. As the new pads bed in though they get a lot better. Once bedded in some ceramics don't have quite as much initial bite as OEM, others do. For the street they all stop more than good enough.
I'm running the Hawk HPS 5.0. They seem slightly better than the stock pads, but don't feel they are dramatically different. They however performed quite well and felt more consistent when running the car at the track. I may check out the Porterfields next as I'm a big fan. Would like something with a little more bite.
One note is that the Hawk pads did not include the stabilizing shims and the factory ones were physically attached to the pads. So make sure you buy those when going aftermarket.
