The Track Thread

Well! Post up a "lap" of a track you have been on, and your setup. Make sure to name any bumps, dips, etc on the track, this could help future drivers on the track or your competitors Since Road Atlanta is fresh in my head from a couple weeks ago, I will start it off.

Track: Road Atlanta
Car: 1990 Mazda Miata
Setup: Seam welded chassis, weld in bar, Tein springs, KYB AGX shocks, OPM strut bar, metal bushing kit, HKS intake, RX-7 AFM, header, Jackson cat, a few other things.

Tires: Toyo Proxes

Driving:

Turn one in the Miata is taken pretty quickly. A quick dab of the brakes and turn in. There is a small dip but it does not mess the Miata up. Speeds are about 75-85mph in here, going up the hill we will aim at the inside, then come back towards the outside and follow the outside line of the track. I turn in for the next turn I THINK at the end of the curbs going up the hill. Anyway tap the curbs and we are in 3rd. Coming towards the esses shift to 4th. As we enter the esses stay outside and turn in SMOOTH in the Miata, it does not like quick movements.Be smooth and straight line the section as much as possible, flat out. Almost ride or do ride the outside curve at the top of the esses and turn in, use ALL of the wide curbing available, there is a "hole" it seems at the end of the curbs, so watch out for a bump . Coming into the hairpin stay outside, brake and into the corner you go. This is a very nice turn being slightly banked. Setting up for the next one is tricky. For me at least. It is on a slight hill I think, something making the apex hard to see. Anyway a few laps you will get the hang of it. Go wide on the exit use the curbs if you want, and enjoy the back straight. If you messed up on the exit you will be slower on the straight. Anyway coming into the "complex" brake hard hard hard, right around the 100' marker. Turn in. This section is pretty easy, but be outside for turn 12, which is the best You cant see over the hill, so aim the car! I stay what seems like the middle but when you come over the hill I end up towards the outside, I make sure I stay that way, dont turn in early here, many do and it doesnt even seem like it or look like it. Turn in, stay flat out, the bakc end on this Miata was a little happy but just ignore it and keep the car on track, keep the foot planted, done with a lap.

Yes, it is not a fast insane car, it is a LOT of fun to drive though. I have been in faster cars, but my memory is still fresh here

If anyone has tips to add from Road Atlanta and other tracks, please add! No driver can ever be so good they cant learn!

Keys to remember for Road Atlanta; Turn 7 is critical for good lap times; Turn 1 must be taken faster than you think you can- siginificant elevation, hardest for me to learn; 5-6 is much faster than you think, must get push off of 5 to take advantage of downhill straight. Must have confidence in car and self to take 12 flat to take advantage of straight.

Right, turn 7 is def. tricky. For 5-6 I saw using the curb on the outside of 5 helped a lot to get speed, in a Miata you need momentum, I am guessing that Porsche is yours, so you have more power lol. But being smooth into 5 and going wide with throttle helped in my car. Turn 12 is always the scary one. I just always tell myself not to let off or I WILL crash lol. Def. go VERY wide out of 12. I guess I know for my car at least using ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL of the track helps a LOTTTT. I mean I tap the curbs almost coming onto the front straight.

I find that 5 is one where you can turn in sharply but you have to open the steering wheel fast if you do that or you'll be at risk of spinning there which is what most people do. In fact turn 5 probably has the most accidents in DE's at RA I would think. I've found that using the curb or not, it doesnt matter I end up going the same speed out of the turn.

I need to trail brake 6, 7 and 10a and maybe even 1 (YIKES, going into at 135)

I dont think I can keep it planted in 12, I'm very close though so maybe I can, only a small feather at the bottom, but I'm carrying 117 at start finish so I'd be 120 max at start finish.

I planned to run this sunday but they are saying rain and I wont go unless there are good enough conditions for me to make a run at a 1:34 (sport cups)
