Road Trip!
Road Trip!
Well tomorrow is the big day, my dad and I are going on a father/son Porsche road trip from Maryland to North Carolina, he will be in the 928 and I will be in the 911. I am looking forward to driving the 911 on the Blue Ridge Parkway this year, I drove the 928 from Grandfather Mountain to the end of Skyline drive last year and now its time to do it in the 911 (FUN)! Thursday morning we are driving from the beginning of the parkway in Va and ending at Grandfather Mountain (NC) sometime in the late afternoon. Friday morning we will set out to conquer the rest of the parkway.
I will take lots of pics and post up when I return. Until then here are some pics from tonight and last year:

We began our journey to Sharks in The Mountains (SITM) in Banner Elk, NC around 3 in the morning to avoid the dreaded DC/NOVA traffic, plus the early start gave us plenty of time to stop at overlooks on the Blue Ridge Parkway for photos and stretching. We arrived at the beginning of the parkway in Virginia around 9am. The beginning is kind of boring until you get to about the 100 mile marker and then you get less sweepers and straight-aways and more twistys. We stopped for lunch at a place called Mabry Mill where we were promptly pic-phoned, who knew two old Porsches would attract so much interest?!

After lunch I got my first shot at driving the 911 with very well worn RA-1s in the rain. I will say it’s not very fun but the rain only lasted for 10 minutes and we enjoyed over 100 more miles of dry open roads.

The second day we met and had breakfast with a gentleman who came all the way from Dubai for SITM! Our conversation must have been pretty good because we didn’t leave for our second leg of the parkway until nearly 10am. Our first stop at an overlook ended up lasting almost 45minutes! First a gentleman and his wife stopped in a S2000 to check the cars out and chat about driving the parkway. Moments after he left a fellow 3.2 brother “couldn’t pass up†stopping the check out the two Porsches. It turns out he was a genuine Porschphile who bought his ‘86 Targa in New Jersey and was driving it down to meet someone in Tennessee.

Tunnels tunnels tunnels, I can’t even describe how much fun I had blasting through the tunnels in second and third gear. The sound of the B & B and the engine at full song was simply amazing. I can’t imagine what it would be like in Monaco in a F1 car! Time got the best of us and we had to cut our journey short by about 90 miles, I guess it will have to wait until next year L To my surprise when we returned to the hotel there was a shiny black turbo-look 911 in the parking lot full of 928s! We all ended up hanging out very late into the night and after a bunch of “adult drinks†I was convinced I needed to take the 911 up to the show/lunch the next morning on Grandfather Mountain and along for the drive later in the afternoon.
Saturday morning we hit breakfast at the usual café, it was very neat to see a line up of five 928s parked across the street!

Around 10:830 the long convoy of 928s left for the event on Grandfather Mountain. After the 928s were parked my Dad and I and our new friends jumped in the 911s and headed up to the top of the mountain to check out the mile high swinging bridge and get a bird’s eye view of the sharks resting in the field below.

As I walked among the 102 928s present that day a certain euro car from Colorado caught my eye. After looking at some of the paper work the owner had on display I found out the car was federalized in early ‘83 no less than 10 miles away from my house! Later in the afternoon awards were handed out for the concour and everyone lined up for a LARGE group photo before heading off on a nice, spirited drive to dinner. The roads were fantastic, I am sure when I put the 911 away at night it dreams of the switch backs that we played on.
450 miles in the rain really wasn’t a great way to end the trip but it was still fun to drive the 911 anyway. I am happy to say that after 900 miles of interstate, and some spirited driving here and there, the 911 didn’t use a drop of oil! I couldn’t ask for a better trip, well maybe less rain would have been nice.

Awesome trip. great how you ran into so many car people on the trip. Now I know you have more pics of the other cars at the event.
Not a boring read at all. Thanks for sharring.
