Excellence Magazine 991 Design Article
Excellence Magazine 991 Design Article
For those of you that are interested in the rationale and decision making analysis that went into making the 991, I recommend you get the April issue of Excellence magazine. It has a relatively detailed, seven page article called “Inside the 991”, which touches on the new technologies integrated into the car and why they were chosen. It discusses, external (body) design changes, structure, suspension, steering, engine and electronics. It dubs the approach as “intelligent performance", and has interviews with responsible executives where they describe the process they went through, the rationale for their decisions and some of the early, pre-decision test results. Though it is a great article that provided excellent insight, it did leave me with several questions.

Good approach Chuck. I'll buy one tomorrow at Barnes and Noble where I have seen it before.
This is a must read. For those that question the direction of development, this article explains how the 991 came to be. Very interesting to see the little bits of the process.

They aren’t value judgment decisions I’m referring, but just interesting points that I would like to learn more about. For example, they had a goal to increase the RPM limit by 300. They recognized they had to make some of the components (rotating?) lighter. They learned “it was better to make some mounted camshafts very exactly, to make the tribology – the interplay of friction and lubrication – better so the friction goes down.” In the next paragraph they describe uses variable pressures for road and track but doesn't describe quantitative amounts or result differences and how that relates to increasing 300 RPM (if it does). In many cases I’m sure it’s because the executives provided the answer and the magazine in their editing took it out or had language translation issues or just didn’t communicate properly. They never addressed the "lighter" comment directly. These are all traps when you attempt to look at a complex issue (designing an automobile) very broadly and not as deeply. On balance, it's worth reading.
