embarrassed by the 991 3.4
I have had my 3.4 manual for nearly a year now and from the first day have been only luke warm to it and in many ways consider it a step backward from the 997. My 12 year old niece was visiting the other day and asked me to take her for a ride. During the ride she commented that the car "makes a lot of noise but doesn't feel very fast". She was right. With the phoney sounds being piped into the cabin you feel like you are in a race car when in fact you are moving forward at a sluggish pace. How I wish I had gotten a 997 GTS instead. It was a humbling experience.
Just use the whole rev range. It feels faster above 5000 RPMs.
Some of it is due To how smooth the new 991 feels. It is very planted and stable. I Am surprised by how quickly I can accelerate without it feeling fast. It is a strange feeling. But enter a turn At Speed and you instantly recognize how fast This car really is.
An M3 (for instance) has more pure power off the line, but the 3.4 991 is a better car all around.
And, as I have always heard it, a Porsche is never about being the fastest 0-100mph. It is about being the best car on the Autobahn, where 60-100mph matters the most.

Leave it running with the key on the seat. I'm sure somebody will like it.
Face it, somebody always will be richer, thinner, more eloquent, and have better toys. Porsche knows this and sells a lot of S and Base cars.

I think to a 12 year old (or many others) how fast it feels is inversely proportional to how good/stable the car is.
In a sports car you need to be doing some good speed (eg 160mph+) to feel fast.
On the other hand, I remember driving a Mazda 2 that's 15 years old, trying to fall apart... driving at 40mph felt FAST...

Well, there is something to that.
My Brother-in-law's 8 year old daughter requested that I drive her to school one morning in my red MX-5 (Miata) in a manner so everybody knew she had arrived.
When asked why we can't go in my shiny new Porsche the answer was an emphatic "No !".
Not good enough - see...

I think basing your happiness on a 12 year olds perception of not feeling fast is suspect. Considering you have had the car for more then a year and have not traded it in is more telling on how you feel about the car.
I too have a 3.4 manual for six months and use it as an everyday car, canyon terrorizer, GT, and occasional speeder. It meets all the challenges I ask it too.
The car is reliable and easy to own which is much more important then a 12 year olds opinion.
