Track buffeting

I noticed that the GT3 mirrors are designed with two outer posts instead of a center post. I'm thinking that's to solve the buffet problem on tracks at high speed with the windows down. Does anyone know if that is a solution and if it can be ordered as a retrofit (maybe now with electric folding mirrors).

No one other than Porsche employees has driven the GT3 on the track. Recently a few auto journalists have driven it on the street. Only a handful of GT3's exist for now. In theory the mirrors can be swapped though I doubt auto fold will work since it's not available on the GT3. The mirrors are described as SportDesign mirrors in the GT3 literature. So there is hope that they can be added to other 991's. The GT3 mirrors are standard on the new Turbo S.

If they work well at stopping the buffeting (which I would bet they do) I'll bet a lot of folks here on 6Speed will be very happy that they will fit on their 991s.

I think I'm going to change my order. My build includes folding mirrors and also painted mirrors. I think they are going to be able to be retrofitted. They don't say exclusive on the configurtor

Agreed. Maybe we should a start a petition asking PCNA to get a much reduced rate for swapping the mirrors
In the case of a performance car like the 911, I see the buffeting issue as a design flaw... It should almost be a recall campaign!

Agreed, I'm actually shocked they released it this way. There is no way they were not aware of the problem well into and before production. It's unacceptable for a performance oriented manufacturer like Porsche to do this.
I imagine the new GT3 mirrors are going to be über $$$$ as well.

Great idea, Serge. In addition, Porsche sends out a survey when they do service. It's extensive and if you're selected to get one, there's a spot at the end that say what else can Porsche do to make the car or their service better. Unfortunately I filled that out before I found out about the new mirror but if enough people mention it on the survey, they are likely to take it seriously.

Now I wish I had taken that survey more seriously... I notice the buffeting with the windows down and not on the track. Still have some break in miles before I head to the track.

Count me in on the order!

We need to talk about this in terms of a recall as it is a safety item that damages our ears and it won't be inexpensive to take the door panels off.
