"Honk" from the engine?

I am a new 911 owner, so excuse me if this is a known and normal thing, but does anyone else get a sort of honking noise from the engine when it is first getting power? Specifically what I hear is right as I start giving it gas and letting out the clutch in 1st, there is something coming from the engine that sounds like a single honk. Cant really tell if it continues because the engine/exhaust sound overwhelms it once I get moving.

I think I know what you mean. I would call it more of a "hum," but I hear it when I drive the car after a cold start; it disappears after a couple of minutes. I've mentioned this to the dealer, but my rep said that most cars make the same sound while the car warms up.

I noticed it in my Prior 991 C4S. Actually A friend of mine heard it too and asked what it was while in the car. I heard it most when I'm getting out of my Lot or trying to find a parking spot. Just as You get it going from a stop and let the clutch up and repeat you can hear it. Its hard to describe the sound but you can hear it just like you said.

I got the same noise on my car (PDK). It happens in cold temperature and when first getting the car rolling from a stop or red light. I hear it after I give it a little gas and let go of the gas pedal. It's a subtle single knock coming from the engine.
I'm not sure what it is but I'll mention it to the dealer when I bring my car in next week for a PCM update and because of a very irritating rattle in the front dash.

it's not really a "honk". It's kinda humming sound and it only occurs when cold right? If we all have it. It's probably normal.

I did struggle with what to call it. There seems to be a tone to it - not just a typical rattling mechanical noise.

Sure it's not just the sound of air induction?

Does it sound anything like you'd have on an old carb engine when you had the air cleaner off and the choke was on?

I agree. Its like a chime almost...hard to put it into words, but its there and you can hear it.

I can't compare it to an old carb, but it definitely isn't air induction noise.

Yeah I'm just thinking of it from the acoustical sound perspective. If it is something that sounds like a honk it is at a relatively low frequency. So to isolate you always start with is what I'm hearing proportional to some moving component.. Camshaft speed, crank speed..

It gets harder though now since many things now run off of electric.. I suppose it could be fuel pump, oil pump/circulation etc..

Funny thing though that happened to me yesterday, was I have my front PA sensors disconnected (accidentally) and haven't gotten them connected up. So I turned down my alert volume setting so it doesn't annoy me.. And when I started up, I heard an odd sound that kinda sounded like a low honking.. For a moment I thought it was my horn but very faint.. Then I realized it was the warning about PA not functioning but for a moment I thought it was coming from the engine as well.

Sounds like what you all are experiencing is something completely different. different.

Air induction does seem to make the best sense from when it happens - right as load is being applied. That said it certainly sounds different from any I have heard before.

Don't mind my lack of knowledge in this department, but would it matter that there is no throttle being applied? I believe that I can still hear the sound if I'm just lightly letting the clutch out from a stop. I'll double check on my drive home.

I have a 3 months old cab with 500 miles on it with the same issue. Search for "oil separator" in the forum. Its a known issue. I have not gotten it fixed yet but I plan to when I take the car in for use vice.

Just checked it out. It does appear to be an issue with a vent in the oil separator. Here's a quote from two forum members who had their car serviced for the same issue:

cy456 - Hallelujah
Got a call today from my service dept, they were able to locate the problem. At first they thought it was a brake problem so they took a few days looking at that but found out it had to do with the oil vent (?). They didn't have the part on hand but I'll find out more tomorrow when I pick it up and sched for when the part does come in. For now:

1 it doesn't harm or hurt the car, so it's ok to drive
2 I'm glad they found something and didn't just tell me "oh that's normal"
3 hey I'm not crazy and imagining things

Will post more tomorrow so you can tell your service dept what to look for
Interesting. My dealer has done the same thing. The part is being installed now.

Initially, the dealer said that they'd been out on the lot and could hear the same noise on other new 991s. Implying that it was normal. Two days later they called back with the oil vent solution. The Service guy then said that if that fixed the problem, they'd have a lot of work ahead of them with the other cars .....

Hopefully this is the end of the story.
Sounds like it isn't a big problem. I'll have the dealer check it out next time I roll by.
