3 button key

THIS WAS TAKEN OFF OF RENNLIST ... THIS IS NOT MY POST

I have a 2004 TT cabrio X50 that was supplied with the same key with 2 remote buttons (door and trunk) that is supplied with the coupe. The dealer says that is all they have ever seen (mine was the second cabrio to go through there), but the owner's manual shows a key with 3 buttons--one additional one that controls the top.

Do any of you know anything about the 3 button key?

DOES ANYONE KNOW A WAY TO GET THIS KEY ????

Those are for Targas, and the third button opens the rear glass lid, not the top.

I will provide the same answer that was posted at Rennlist. There is a 3-button cabriolet key (the third button allows for remote operation of the top) but it is only available on ROW cars. You cannot get the 3-button key for a US-spec car. We have the plaintiff bar to thank for this.

Rest Of the World, as in parts/specs that are used everywhere except for North America. We get "special" treatment

You MIGHT be able to get a 3-button key on E-bay (everything but body parts seems to be for sale there), but it isn't going to work with your car. The immobilizer circuit in the ignition requires the mating code to be generated by the key before it will operate, and I believe it would be quite hard to break the encryption. And the dealer, which is the only place you can get a key easily, has to order it after verifying that you are you and that you still own the car, and the order is then specific (obviously) to that car, ie, not a 3-button key.

BTW, there is some doubt about whether just getting a key would be sufficient anyway, or if there is additional circuitry that has been dis-enabled in the top mechanism as well.

Has anyone asked their dealers if there's a way 'around' this? If all the mechanical pieces are there for the key to operate the top, then it would seem like someone with a little know how (at a dealer probably) could get a working 3-key. Or not? Or, would it possibly help to contact 'the factory' diretly and request it from them?
