Bannerman Run retraced
Bannerman Run retraced
We missed the April run but Ken was kind enough to send me the route information so we went back and retraced the run. Here are some pictures of the castle we took.

Front of the castle. Note that the structures on the island are bigger than they really are due to the clever visual illusions used. The footprints are not square and most things are not symmetrical. Try comparing the two towers on the sides.

Ken,
I took the shots with Sony DCR-PC330. It's a 3 Mega Pixel camcoder + camera. The lense is Carl Zeiss with a standard filter from Sony. It's a great camcorder but not a good camera. However, it saves me the trouble of bringing two devices when I go out.
We got on the island with a tour group. They just opened the island in June but it's still dangerous so people are required to wear hard hats. It's about a 20 minutes boat ride from the Newbourgh waterfront. See the URL below.

They way the castle was built is quite amazing. Mr. Bannerman was the architect (though his lack of experience and changing heart can be evident in some places). He drew sketches on napkins and scratch paper all over Europe and then came back and asked the builders to follow the sketches.
The Newbourgh Landing (waterfront) has some good restaurants as well. The River Grill seems to be one of the best.
If you go, be sure to look out from the top of the residence and see the Hudson river. If you don't look for it, you will miss it. I wouldn't mind having this view from my back window.
