What could this noise be?

Yesterday I got stuck in the mother of traffic jams here in southern cal. As I crept along for a few hours I started to hear a whine like noise from the rear. It peaked around 1400 – 1800 rpm and the only way to make it stop was by depressing the clutch or just slightly tapping the clutch. Everything worked normally. The effort required to depress the clutch was normal .
The whine was somewhat like the sound of a turbo spinning but much louder. Any ideas?
Thanks

Kevin

Thanks for the reply.

The clutch is stock with 20k miles.
After re-engauging the clutch the noise does not come right back but gradually it will return.

+1 Power Steering Reservoir.

There is a valve that starts to fail inside- the wistling is the valve vibrating. If it does ultimately fail, Pentosin (used for clutch and PS) can leak. TTFlambe can result.

The clutch in releases the pressure temporarily and the sound goes away. The fact that it comes back gradually is textbook.

There is a TSB on this. Known issue.
