Tuner Loyalties
Craig, well said.. I believe a major reason most people that have suffered bite the bullet and suck it up is because of protectign their own interests just in case if there is a need to go back to the same tuner for service or other reason. If the bridge was burnt, the tuner may come up with excuses to not touch the car as a way to punish.
Just recently, I had a really costly and unpleasant experience in upgrading my turbo kit. Whenever there was problem, I attempted to solve it with the vendor but I was always given the run around, check this, check that and it still would not work properly. In the process of this getting to the bottom of it, I have spent countless money, hours and stress trying my best to find out the problem. Later on, the vendor suggested my motor could have been damaged or lousy turbo install work and etc.. I did tried my best to sort it through with the vendor but at the end the vendor has basically told me to go away and not willing to take responsibility.
To make misfortune worse, the vendor decided to punish me for posting my experience on the forum, the vendor lowered the pricing for the same kit by about 2500 bucks and when I had potential buyer for my " used " kit in the for sale section, the vendor told my potential buyer that he will not cover warranty and the potential buyer will not receive support as well. That basically put me in a very bad spot and I would be stuck with it.
Now, the GOOD news is I have just delivered my car to another extremely respectable tuner in the porsche world. I am removing the existing kit and installing a brand new turbo kit on the car. At the same time, I have requested the tuner to inspect the existing turbos it self , the install work and perhaps pull a few dynos based on my existing set up.
I am sure if I start to name names, I may be bashed immediately, but I believe the dots will eventually be connected.

Being I am in the market for an ECU tune for starters it would be nice to
know who this was. Could you PM me?
RD
Hi Ken, I know you and I have talked a few times, but I am a little confused, the offer was there to take the car to the MFG of the kit to get it sorted out, I'm curious to know why you didn't take the car there? If you want to PM I understand that...Isnt going this way allot more $$$ and aggravation?
Hi Paul, I will pm you the details.

Discussing the positives and negatives we've had with our respective tuners is a brilliant idea. However, I'm not entirely surprised that, so far, no one has said anything negative and actually named a tuner.
I agree, this forum is heavily biased towards the venders. I, for one, don't believe anything any of them tell me until I see documented, independent and repeated results concerning their tune or their newest flux capacitor product.
I wish I had something negative to say here, really. However, being new to the 996tt world, I don't.....not yet anyway. There is no reason to be PC here. I believe there are two sides to most stories and occasionally three (he said, they said and what really happened).

Craig, it's good to see you posting here again! You've been missed!
I totally agree and it's why I've learned to resist the urge to tune. At one point I guess I was probably the only totally stock 996 turbo on this forum.

You hit the nail on the head!
I went through this exact story with Skyline GTRs in the UK in 2001-03, when I had an R32, R33 and R34 GTR, all tuned to very high power. I was the tuners 'friendly customer' and my car was used to test new developments. After spending over $100,000 equivalent on modifications and rebuilds, i got fed up, sold up and came back to Porsche with a GT2.
When I decided to modify that GT2 I went with Ruf in Germany, based solely on the fact that their tuning was proven over decades, Govt tested and they only sold a small number of packages that could not be altered. They have delivered exactly what was required and the car is faultless years after being upgraded and running 190+mph over 50 times. I put road fuel in it and drive it - thats it.
Quality does cost, but the old motto of 'buy cheap, buy twice' is as valid for tuning as anywhere else.
