Both of my head lights suddenly cut out and I figured it was the dashboard switch. Got a replacement from Sunset Porsche for about $80.

Thought I'd take a few snaps detailing the process for the rest of you gear heads!

1- Disconnect battery. Then take out two #20 tork screws on the lateral aspect of the left AC vent:



2- remove the light switch **** by pushing in the lock under the **** with a small screw driver and pulling





3- remove 3rd tork screw in medial aspect, behind ****:



4- pull AC vent straight back- surprisingly snug- requires a firm pull



5- remove nut around light switch




6- disconnect electrical connections





7- remove bezel around **** and switch



8- twist switch to remove



9- when replacing make sure groove in switch lines up with grove in bezel or else bezel will not seat flush.

10- reconnect battery and off to Mexico for some late night runs!

I recently spent $190 at the dealer for parts + labor to have mine replaced.

Looks like this would have been the easiest way to save myself that hassle.

 

In my previous 996C2C sometimes the lights did not came up...was it the switch or a relay?

I had my light switch intermittently not work and was going to order another part when I remembered that I had the MAF cleaning stuff I had bought. So i sprayed the contacts of the switch and down the tube of the switch and reconnected the **** and tuned it around in all the light positions to allow the liquid to clean within the switch assembly.

After letting the switch dry I reconnected everything and the lights now are working great.

So if you have the MAF cleaning stuff give it a try and the switch might come back to life.

 

this is a great idea for this and probably any other electrical switch. After all, these switches are exactly cheap anyways!

 

Yep, that is exactly how it goes, I went this path last weekend. Now I feel bad that I didn't take pics and post em up. Great idea and this will be very helpful to those of us in need.

Did cleaning the switch connectors fix your problem once and for all? Did the problem come back? I'm wondering because I saw another post from someone else who replaced the light switch and it turned out to be the ignition switch.

I have a 2002 Turbo and the headlights (both) sometimes don't turn on. Most of the time they do turn on. Sometimes I just have to turn the switch off and on a few times and it comes on. Sometimes I have to shut the car down and restart the engine and turn the light switch on.

I replaced the ignition switch and the light switch still intermittently did not work. I then replaced the light switch and everything works great! I wasted $30 in misdiagnosing the ignition switch. Not bad.

Yes, cleaning the switch has fixed my lights, have not had a single issue since.

 

makes me happy i'm never out after dark( in the 996tt )

 

We just bought a 2004 C4S and got a PPI done, they said the headlights are not working and said it is most likely the switch. Can you guys tell me what lights work on your car when the switch stops working? Does complete headlight unit not work or just the high/low beam? Do the fog lamps in the headlight work?

The reason ask is because I have yet to pick the car up and I need to drive it back 8 hours to get home and it could be dark by then...
