$6K For A Complete Clutch Job?

This is a follow up to what I posted below. I am a noob when it comes to the mechanism of how a car works, I am learning.

https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/996-turbo-gt2/193204-i-think-i-toasted-my-clutch.html

My tech just called and told me that I need to replace the guide tube, pressure plate, fly wheel, and the clutch. The reasons he gave are that the release bushing bearing is broken and I overextended the throw-out bearing to the point where the visceral coupling melt and damaged all the parts. He explained to me that every time I keep you push down the clutch pedal; I am putting pressure on the throw-out bearing. He can do the job with OEM parts for $5,400 or a GT2 parts for $5,700. Does that sound right? I might have to shop around to see if I can get a better price.

Any advices are very much appreciated for this noob! He threws so many parts out there that I have no clues what he was talking about and I have to google how clutch work to kind of understand what is he referring to.

Thanks,

TC

look carefully, thare are plenty of upgraded clutch system with everything you listed for around 2000, you only need to see how much he will charge in time to do the job.

Labor from a good Independent should be 1.2-1.4K.

Clutch should be 2K for an organic to 5 plus K for a carbon.

I've called a few local Porsche shops and they are quoting a flat rate for $800 for the clutch job. You can get a Sachs clutch kit for $700, flywheel $600?

Did he give you a jar of sandy Vaseline with that estimate?

I suggest you take a knowledgeable friend with you and go look at the parts.

That is how I felt when he called - me holding the vaseline jar!

Thanks everyone for chiming in. I think I will bring my bro-in-law to the shop and have him take a look at the mess. I believed he quoted that price after he called the stealership for a quote since the figure is very similar to fdorn's estimate.

yes holding the clutch pedal down does put pressure on the release bearing and the pressure plate your usging hydralics to oppose the pressure plate mechanics to squeeze the disk which transfers power from engine to transmission that is the way it works.

holding it in ata stop light which is what he might be refering to is done every day by thousands of people dont worry about it.

a good aftermarket clutch which is better then OEM as far as griping and clamp load

stock uses an Organic disk easiest to slip and takes alot of abuse as far as rookie drivers is concerned. but it can not hold alot of horsepower it will slip eventually.

aftermarket clutch units improve a couple things Clamp load which is how hard the pressure plate pushes on the clutch disk and generally the material used on the disk. you can get a stage 1-3 aftermarket clutch for about same price as OEM and have a much better clutch in your car.

one thing you should look at while the car is down is a GT2 slave setup like this one
http://www.evoms.com/marketplace/ViewProduct.asp?Now=11%2F23%2F2009+3%3A08%3A56+PM& ProductID={8826909F-D70C-4FD3-931E-E710862AD1C1}&OrgID={CA5E16BC-D877-4137-8237-7EB9084DD3D8}&ParentID={54EDE288-22B5-45C3-83AB-B002C337C06B}&Curr={54EDE288-22B5-45C3-83AB-B002C337C06B}

but do your research and make sure your okay with a stiff clutch pedal and no power assist like stock.

but it should not be 6k

Damn... That is outragious. I got mine done with the following parts for $3K:

964RS Lightweight Flywheel
Clutchmasters Sprung Kevlar lined disc
Sachs motorsports 999 Pressure plate with fulcrum mod
new tube, new bearings, new seals, new rear main seal

Total price WITH labor from Lufteknic in Richmond Va. was $3000.

$6k is way high like all the others above have said. I just got done replacing mine and I think it was about $3600 + tax for an upgraded cluth (sachs stg 2), flywheel, install and the misc pars (throw out bearing, etc.)

My indy labor rate is pretty low compared to most so the estimates of 4200-4600 seem right in line given a higher labor charge.

Where do I buy Sachs Stage 1 kit? I did a google search and vivid has one for $1700. Someone mentioned it should be around $800 ( I could be wrong). What flywheel and pressure plate should I ask my tech to buy?

Thanks,

TC
