Cooling fan

Do any of you hear a rattle from the engine compartment cooling fan when the driver's door is closed, or when the rear deck lid is closed?

Mt dealer tells me... "they all do that".

It's been a while since I messed with my cooling fan, Dock, but I don't remember mine making a "rattle" type sound. I will pay attention more closely next time.

My cooling fan rattles lightly when I close the driver's door, and when I close the engine compartment lid.

Oh, you mean when it isn't actually running? I'll go and check that tomorrow if it doesn't need to be running.

I should have been more clear...it rattles with the fan not running.

You mean the hollow " whu-whump " rattle ? Yes , tech says they all do it eventually as the plastic fan blade's bearing /shaft distorts due to the extreme heat . I complained and they put in a new fan unit which was quiet. After a few thousand miles , it's starting to do it again.
It's a bit embarrassing as it eventually gets loud enough that people in parking space next to you assume the door is making that cheap rattle sound, like a rusted Yugo .

I had that noise. I jammed some foam pieces around the fan shroud until I got into the dealer for a fix. It seems to be coming back a bit. Mine would clunk rather loudly when driving on the freeway over expansion cuts. Sounded like my "trunk" was slamming around.

Mine sounds like someone lightly and rapidly taps the cool fan's blabes five or six times with a hard object, like a pencil.

Yeah that's it - a hollow almost " honking " " rattle" as if someone grabbed the fan blade and rapidly pushed it up and down on it's spin shaft several times . Sometimes sounds like tapping a large empty plastic cup rapidly with a pencil, too.

Dock, I checked this morning and mine makes a "quick" rattle when I shut the rear deck lid, but shutting the driver's side door seem to not affect the rear fan. I hope that this helps.

Thanks...I'm going to have Hennessy replace the fan on my car. The new one may make the same noise, but I'm going to give it a try anyway.
