996 TT vs. Viper srt 10

went to the grocery store the other day, and pulled up to a red light. i was at the front and all of a sudden a loud car down shift right next to me!! it was a red dodge viper srt 10!! what a car i have to say!! not my favorite but very cool!! Who wouldnt race?? i gave him the sign that i wanted to race by sounding my turbos!! on green we went!! 0-60 it was dead even!! once i hit 70 i shifted into 3rd and pulled away by 1/2 car length! at 100 i had him by almost a whole car length!! at 125mph i pulled harder to a full 2 car length lead! at 140 i looked pack and he let off!!

gues he was disappointed that his 500 hp 525 tq car couldnt hang with a stock TT!! ha ha, that made my day!! those turbos saved my ***!! lol

Justin.....

Nice job. Sounds kind of odd though. you should have killed him from the start given your tremendous traction advantage. It is very hard to launch an SRT-10 given the large amount of torque, runflat tires, rear wheel drive ect. Never the less, nice job. You may want to watch out, however, because, not unlike 996tt owners, viper owners often modify there cars. Given the fact that they are starting with more stock horsepower and more than twice the cubic inches, there is quite a bit of potential in these cars - just ask Shank (or me or MANA)

THat does seem odd that you pulled away. A stock 996TT or evan an X50 would not pull a stock SRT10, especially in the upper gears.

StephenTi's 996tt (when stage 1 Upsolute 505RWHP) and my SRT10 when bone stock were Neck and Neck, and it appeared the SRT was almost a half fender and pulling on the Upsolute post 130mph. Stephen's was chipped. These were 2nd/3rd gear rolls, however from a hole, I am sure awd would be the advantage, and then it would take the SRT forever to play catchup.

Actually, it was 455rwhp and 505rwtq, but otherwise, Shank is right... my chipped Turbo couldn't pull on his STOCK SRT10 at all. A stock SRT10 should be able to walk both a stock Turbo and X50.

Not owning either vehicle, having driven both, inmo, the SRT will pull a 996TT, no problem.

An X50 Turbo beat an SRT-10 in a 0-100 mph run conducted by R&T (Aug '03 issue)...8.8 sec for the X50 versus 9.2 sec. for the Viper; a pretty big difference. I've seen several tests where a stock Turbo ran 0-100 mph in 8.9-9.2 sec.

The non-X50 Turbo, X50 Turbo, and SRT-10 all fall into the "driver error makes the difference" range in terms of their general acceleration abilities when starting from a stop. In a rolling encounter, a half second difference between both cars going WOT can also skew the results.

From a roll, the viper would win, drivers being equal. From a stop, the viper will struggle with traction. The stock tires and suspension on the SRT have lots of tire spin in first and second. 700hp supercharged SRT's have trouble getting a sub 4 second 0-60 time with stock Pilot Sport runflats. Once moving, the acceleration in the SRT is intant and formidible.

You pulled a Viper SRT-10 but still wasn't sure if you'd pull a slightly modded WRX Sti?

I have raced a SRT 10 in my turbo, I have a chip, K&N and that’s about it. Smoked him bad. It may be the altitude here, we are about 5500 feet and the turbo has less power loss. But regardless of why, the fact is I smoked him good, it was really no contest, both from a roll and from a dig.

I don’t see how some of you think the SRT 10 would win. Been there done that and the Turbo rocked!!

I remember watching a video of a 385hp C5 Zo6 racing a new Viper from a roll(around 40mph) and it was an even match. Sometimes the Viper would pull on the vette and vice versa. I believe the vette only had an exhaust while the viper was stock. Goes to show that a lot has to do with the driver.

At your altitude the Viper loses almost 20% of it's power while you loss is less than 5%. Plus you have mods so it is not a fair comparison. BUT you run what you brung so if he was willing to race he deserves the beat down.

At sea level, stock vs. stock, he would have taken you down.
