Safe boost

Their is alot of contradiction on what is considered a safe boost pressure on a non built engine. Please post what boost pressure and on what turbos you run. Im just interested, some say 1.5 bar is way to much and 1.2 is max but others insist 1.5 is fine!!! Mine will be running 1.4-1.5 bar on a2860 tials.

I'm going to ask this same question next week when my car goes in for the stage 1 kit. My gut is telling me 1.2, but I don't know.

I am talking about cars with bigger turbos. Flash should see you at 1.0-1.1 unless x50 then maybe 1.2-1.3

with 16/24's ( flashed ) mine will peak at 1.2 in cool/fog. i never seem to have enough room in front of me to need or want more, so i'm not even familiar with the concept of "sustained boost"

I will take a swing at this.

Let me start by saying the question is too simple for all the issues involved. Boost is just one variable in determining a safe program for your motor. The other issues include but are not limited to timing, octane, IAT, and all the other mods to the car.

That being said I have safely run 1.5 bar with 16.5 degrees timing on pump in my car with a stock block.

There is only 1 answer to this thread... Whatever YOUR tuner recommends you run based on your mods, fuel and how you drive...and likely that's what you have. If you run more boost than your tuner recommends... all bets are off....

I would add the old "trust but verify" to this. Do some logs and find out whats going on. If your timing is dipping to 4-5 degrees and is sporadic under load with AFRs going fat, you've got knock sensor activity and the motor is attempting to save itself. I've seen lots of logs from "safe" tunes from "reputable" tuners where the motor is clearly saying "holy crap, please stop doing this to me before I puke a rod onto the pavement".

The first 2 mods to any 996tt: Durametric and a boost leak test.

My tuner thinks 1.5 should be fine but he is just going to check fueling and egt and iat. I just like to see what the general ideas are

It is not boost, it is cylinder pressure. Tony nailed it, different turbos, exhaust, mods at the same boost pressure are not the same. All factors must be considered.

I have some super billet k16s, intercoolers, exhaust , 1 bar actuators, 60lb injectors, v-power fuel and mine is a protomotive tune set to run 1.2 bar which it holds nicely, im in process now of asking todd if we could get 1.4 out of it... we will see. Whether that is "safe" boost for my set up, only he will know
