K16 Billet VS K24/18g turbos.
K16 Billet VS K24/18g turbos.
I'm looking to do a turbo upgrade. I would like to put out around 550 at the wheels. My car will be used mainly as a street car. I'd like to know the difference between these two setups. I've been doing some research and what I gather is that the K16's will spool a bit faster, but the k24/18g's have better top end power. Is this correct, and how big is the difference? Thanks.
your correct... it will be hard to get 550whp on k16 billets... ( nor 16gs). on 93 octane. you will need at least a 5 bar, maybe injectors, a clutch, good after market WGs, intercoolers, open exhaust, intake to turbos... k16s are easy to get but k24s are not... so your options are limited... a good tune make s a big difference as well... I do have clients making 560all wheel mustang dyno on 91 with meth.... OEM ICs..

I went through the exact same scenario over the winter. I finally chose the 18gs because I wanted to run less boost but still get the same (maybe better? Haven't dynod) results on 93.
For what it's worth, I can also tell you I don't drive around wishing my 18gs spooled faster

No turbo can spool quick enough :)

K24/18g's aren't too bad, I'd love to move the spool about 500RPM's to the left..

I'm guessing I can fish around your site but, have you tried 3071's too? What seems to be the HP/tq shift to the right between the A28's, 71's and or the 76's? Sorry for the OT!

Neil, thanks. I'll probably give you a call to discuss. Sorry to the OP I didn't mean to go off topic.

A28's hit harder than K16's, K24's, and we use a similar turbo on the 997TT P800 that out-spools the VTG's.
I believe Tym messed around with the 3071's but I don't have any data on them, next step up would be our massaged A30's which are good for 850+whp.

850rwhp on Alpha30s will be extremely tough on a 3.6L. on a 3.8L yup.
i run 2.0 bar through newest billet A3076 with FP covers and make 800rwhp. internal gates from Tial dont allow me more boost. i also run E85, so I suppose there could be another 20-30 from C16.
my A3076 also spool as fast as My FVD Race k24s did and just as fast as K16 car with tune/exhaust on same dyno. A28s spool insanely fast.

997tt engine has superior heads ( my heads flow more then 997 heads), and superior intake manifold (which i also have on my car) so a 996tt with stock heads, intake manifold won't match the 997tt. at 800whp power level ported heads and intake mani are worth good power.
i do agree with you that the small hotsides are definetly the bottleneck along with the internal gates. heck external gates would help alot.
Pair of these came in on Tuesday

Do you have a 3rd party dyno back to back that shows this ?
I'd like to see it, at 1.1 bar on cali 91 octane, I'm at around 525WHP. I've seen threads saying a 75MM TB and intake plenum shifts the RPM to the left also. Typically as part of a group buy thread, I'm not into the hype. Often hard to sort out what's hype on these forums and whats not, also seems as confusing as to whether or not I would see the benefit at my power level.
My best move may be methanol injection and intake piping, then re-assess from there. I assume I would be able to turn to the boost up to 1.3/1.4 bar and pickup 60WHP or so ..
