3) no one has had a pinned connection fail (or leak)

Sounds like we need more time to definitively figure this out. Otherwise, this debate reminds me of manual vs. PDK . To each their own....
- We have 1st hand reports of welds leaking (multiple I think)
- Tony reports pins leaking, but I don't think we have an idea how those were pinned (DIY or professionally) so it's hard to make an assessment.
- I have seen one stock car in person that has had the hose fail (on the highway).
- We have several reports of successful pinning done professionally (GMG and others)
- More early models than later ones have failed (2001-2002) suggesting time as a major factor.

At the end of the day, there is not enough evidence to draw a solid conclusion other than either can be done wrong and result in engine coming out again.

If driving on the street, I'd take my chances for sure as the number is still fairly small, but it seems as if this is an inevitable occurrence for most of these cars.

Thanks for the additional info. In my efforts to follow this topic here on 6SO, I hadn't seen these reports. I have seen (heard about) some coolant hose failures on fully stock cars -- but they turned out to be the hose itself rather than the connections. I certainly plan to have this done at the next opportunity (probably at the clutch replacement).

I also had a hose on the pass side come apart. the one with the plastic tee. I was at highway speeds at the time and did not need to stop asap thankfully as the coolant made the front brake useless.

Guys this is a info and poll thread. Please lets keep the bashing off the Thread. If anyone would like To talk to me I'm listening.

FYI I have not had an issue with my fitting and the car has over 40k miles. I have the Motor out and am welding the fitting in that I bought off AWD.

Those fittings from AWD really make things easy, Also the casting that you are welding to are of good quality a proper cleaning and prep is all thats needed. How is you beast coming along?

Tim, the fitting are a good cheap insurance and having it out of the car was the best option.

I am going to post on my thread in a few minutes. Its been a crazy week.

2003 K24/18G with 55,000 miles...
Line behind the alternator blew out... ended up having to replace alternator also.
Ordered new bungs from Torque Solutions and welded them to motor.

You'll notice most of the people this has happened to have higher mileage cars (for Porsche's anyway).

I say it's a matter of when, not if...

I have heard of it happening to GT3's also... so it's a Mezger engine thang.

Glue... can you beleive it? What were they thinking?

2002

38K miles

Modified

Preventative, Welded

My aircraft welder that welded all 8 of my fitting just removed the original fittings, cleaned them up, and welded those. He has done a number of these motors and said he preferred welding the OEM pieces as opposed to the aftermarket fittings that some people buy. I'm not sure why people spend money on the aftermarket fittings. I've had no issue with the welding and the car is mainly used on the track. If you track your car than having these welded really provides piece of mind...

agreed. there is no reason to buy new fittings, stock ones can be cleaned up and welded just fine.

Have we had any new reports of failures since that rash of them early-middle of last year?
