Can I run M1 10/50!?
i've never even seen it. wanted a thicker summer weight and can't find any 5/50 locally. my tech has m1 10/50 and says it OK!? i'm a bit dubious.
any fast advice without ( an oil debate
) is appreciated! thanks

i know. i've don't ever recall even seeing this before. ambient down here is never below 60 and up to 100+ daily soon enough so the 10 may be ok?. just wondering if its even "approved"!? i get screech at startup in 100 temps from "cold" since the 0-40 is like castor oil when hot!
had to make a snap decision. but instead found castrol synth 5/40 and 5/50 which i'll mix 50/50 lol. thanks guys.
i don't know where you guys find this 5/50 or even 15/50 M1 in stores. ll i ever see is 5/40 or 0/40 retail.

Additive package is very critical to a modern oil's ability to do its job. By mixing oils you have compromised the oil designer's additive package.
You have created a Frankenoil and no one can say how that will turn out.
As for 10w-50 no 10w-xx oil is on the approved list, so it is not ok to run it according to Porsche.
If you chose to stray off the reservation and run an non approved oil then you can pick the oil any old way you want. Makes no difference as you have disregarded the input from the only valid source.
I can find Mobil 1 5w-50 (not a typo for 15w-50!) at the Mobil oil distributor. The distributor sells the oil in minimum quantities of one case, 6 quarts to the case.
Since the distributor moved away from my area (near work) I stopped buying it from the distributor but I can now find it at least one auto parts store where I live. In fact, the SM at the dealer that services my car can get it for me at no added cost. The auto parts store will deliver it to the dealer with just a phone call.
Just had the Boxster's oil changed and had the tech use Mobil 1 5w-50.
Next time the Turbo's oil is due I'll have the dealer's service department source some 5w-50.

the guys that tune/mess with my car and race them have been mixing 0/40 and 5/40 for years. if any harm has resulted? it would be news. but i change my oil often and these are similarly compounded synth oils. i really don't feel it's an experiment, as such. but thx for the headsup!
also.. i've read porsche's updated/ammended approved oil list. it's got bout 50 different oils and weights listed as ok. this has helped me move away from my formerly strict reliance upon M1.
ADD: yes macster, i neglected to point out to you by reply, that indeed, i am NOT going with the earlier available 10/50 M1 as it doesn't even SOUND right, given what little i know. i opted for castrol synth as stated upthread. it's ok on the "list".

Any NAPA can get M1 5w50 for you. They don't have it on the shelf but can usually get it for you same day if you live in a large city. It's a great oil especially if tracking your car as it doesn't shear down as much and keeps your oil pressures up a little higher.
