uestion for those who had their tranny pinion bearing replaced

Question for those who had tranny pinion bearing probs
I think my pinion bearing is going bad. When I accelerate in 4, 5 and 6 gear it makes noise. I disconnected the front driveshaft and the noise is still there.
So when I am coasting at 50-60mph I hear a definate bearing noise. This when I am out of gear, clutch out, and tranny in neutral. It makes sense because the rear driveshafts are still turning, but I just wanted to confirm with anyone who had the problem. So did yours make noise in neutral when coasting at speed?? Thanks Mike

mine didn't and only whined in 3rd and up. never coasting, and only while under load. i didn't wait long enough to see if it got "worse" and recognized it quickly as trans bearing noise.. and i know very little about it, though i know more now lol.
if that's all that's wrong with your box? consider yourself lucky as it is a cheap fix notwithstanding the hassle/labor to get in there. gl w it.

theres a huge differential cost-wise btw simply refreshing the box and bearings than just replacing stuff. assuming you have no worn gears, you can get out for the price of opening it and sealing it back up. certainly the 1st/2nd synchros and rings are the next least expensive parts beyond bearings which cost next to nothing. but you won't know if you have any worn gears until you get it opened up. therein lies the uncertainty.
also, many opt to use this as a chance to change gearing if gears actually need replacing or whatnot. mine were all like new, so i just added a wavetrac tbd and off i went.
the most important aspect of the entire process hinges upon what level of honesty, fairness and acumen you encounter when it comes to choosing who to perform the work.
the internal work you ever have done on either the motor or the box will be among the most important relative to the life of the car.
i still am at loss to understand why the noise is prevalent at speed in neutral? that's the x factor for me, since it doesn't read like the usual condition during which you'd hear gearbox whine.

I spoke to Roger at California motorsports and he confirmed that sometimes you can hear the bearing noise in neutral at speed, depending on how bad the pitting in the bearing is.
Looks like I better get this thing fixed, Mike

I used to hear this noise since 2 years, car still running good, im not ready to pay 7k euros at this moment.
It's not really that bad to me

can't be the bearing still... after two years.. can it!?
i lived with it for about 3 startups, couple miles testing the gears.. and "drive to workshop" lol

mike.. at the risk of being obvious.. pls dont drive it any more than you have to. there's no telling what else you could do. just be hoping it's only the bearings and you'll dodge a hefty repair bill. gears are north of 700/800 etc....

Getting mine torn apart now. Mine got louder until it was a noticeable tick almost in conjunction with a whirr. I'll keep you posted as likely pinion bearing and we will see about third gear too.

I had a noise under load only that got progressively louder as time went by. Seemed to be worse in colder weather. It was the thrust bearing in the trans. Had it replaced. They replaced a bunch of other stuff while they were in there. All good now.
