Wrap Removal!

Careful when removing your wrap! I had carbon wrap on my bonnet (hood) and had it removed. Well, that didn't go well!

I am surprised as it seems aluminium is simply painted over? Isn't there supposed to be a primer underneath?

Any paint gurus out there with an answer?

The rest of the hood unwrapped without problem, this area however didn't. Perhaps my hood was painted at some point by the previous owner but surely they wouldn't paint straight onto aluminium without primer whoever was doing it?

Strange...

At a glace it looks like that hood was repainted, I highly doubt that's a Porsche 14 step process there. Wraps will protect the paint but when removing it, it will find any paint defects. Also some wraps require heat during removal to reduce the chance of tearing paint.

Sucks that it happened bro, I can feel your heartbreak seeing it!

I was unaware that the hood was aluminum. I think you have a respray there as Porsche's process is the best out there that I'm aware of.

I just removed my wrap and I had suspicions the front bumper was repainted. The wrap took huge chunks of paint with it. Stock was fine. I also used a heat gun to remove it. Without heat it's pretty abrasive

My heart sank. Then I was ready to scream. But then I collected myself. Will get the whole bonnet done properly now.

It's actually kind of common Porsche paint or not, if the wrap is on there for a long time left in the heat/ sun a lot etc .. Some times even if sits in the garage as the wrap ages the more probable it is to take paint off .

Happened to friend with his gtr a bit on the pumper and he was being completely **** when he was taking it off .. Happened to a friend with a 997 tt also

If there was a respray then another consideration is the cure time between paint and wrap. If not enough time has passed (min of 30 days) then there's a good chance paint will peel off with the wrap.

This is what I have been told as well by a paint specialist.

Agreed but not in my case. I had my car wrap free for 4 years. I think perhaps a local repair on the hood was to blame as the rest of the hood unwrapped ok.

Ps. Also careful with the edges of your hood. If they role it over the edge the edge itself is vulnerable too!

Your hood is steel, not aluminum. Grab a magnet...

Not that I didn't believe you ;-), I went and checked. You are right. Numerous magazines, multiple internet sources and people on forums including this one, have stated that 996 turbo has aluminium bonnet as part of weight saving programme.

This is incorrect. Another myth put to bed.

Thanks pwdrhound. I am now less concerned about painting it.
