It's happening

Just put an offer in on a triple black '99 cab. 75k mi, 22k on a Porsche remanufactured motor + clutch. Interestingly, the original motor did not go in the ways I have read about. The owner bottomed out the car and cracked the case. Ouch!

Offered $18k dependent on the PPI report. Looks like he will take it. Will post pic if/when the deal is done.

Anyone care to chime in on the deal? Assuming nice body, interior, new tires, and clear PPI. $18k sound about right?

Shoot. Looks like someone came in today with a higher offer. Guess I am back in the market.

I was wondering about that too. From what I have seen in my searches, it looks like the cabs are worth slightly more. Any issues with the top tho, it drops precipitously.

Also wondering.. why are 996 hardtops so cheap? I have seen a number of them on Craigslist for under $1000. One in the Bay Area last week for $500.

i think they are pretty cheap here on the west coast because you don't really need one. people buy them thinking they should (or the dealer included it) and then they find they don't use it much. the soft top does a pretty good job of keeping the rain out (as long as you don't let the drains get clogged up), and is fairly quiet when driving. and as long as it's not pissing down it's almost always warm enough to drive with the top down (if you have the wind guard in). plus the hardtop is not that easy to put on/off and is a PITA to store when you aren't using it.

i'd definitely recommend saving the $500-$1000 and spending it on a stereo upgrade so that you can hear the music when driving with the top down.

Personally, I love a hardtop in the winter. Not because the car is more water tight. Like you say, the soft tops are great. I like the hardtop because it dapens the noise a lot in the interior. Especially the noise when it is raining. Since I rarely take the top down in the winter, I prefer mounting the hardtop in Nov and removing in March. Been doing it for years.

As for the cost, I dunno. I have been driving a Honda S2000 the last few years. You simply cannot find a hardtop for one under $2k. Even Miata hardtops are more than the 996's I have seen.

In some years, the hardtop was standard equipment with a cab. In the northeast, it's more necessary, but it also makes it feel like a different car. It's a nice change both ways.

Ask if the owner has a wall mount for the hardtop. They cost about $600 new, but you can build one yourself for a few bucks.

Regarding the price, if it's worth it to you then the price is right.
