cabrio top lube

Anyone got any guide or info to share on lubricating the moving parts on the convertible top? Mine makes sounds like the intro to that old Rod Serling spooky show from the 60s.

interesting topic...my top was clean and quiet until we hit a 90 degree day...thought that would help the lube but today it was unusually squeaky and loud...

have the top replaced next week so I will ask what they use and respond...

I put the top about half way up/down and lubed the joints with WD40 (just be sure to use the straw go slow so it doesn't go everywhere). Been great everysince 1 yr and counting. I did the same thing with the rear spoiler hinges and same results.

silicone lube , you can do all the rubber with this also . it helps but does not solve the rattle box this roof is.

fyi, technically wd40 isnt a lubricant, its a penetrating fluid, silicon spray will do a better job and last longer, and wont be all greasy like wd

I have done lots of things to my top when in the 'Service position' and its been working fine now all summer. A light smear of camera O ring grease on the plastic covering of the middle hook, also on the entrance to the parts on the windscreen frame that accepts the top. The rear latch and bracket in the center of the clam shell. Then a light quick spray of WD40 on every moving part I could see and reach, either side on the controlling arms that lift and lower the top. Maybe I should have used a silicone spray but hey, WD40 is what I had at hand and the top works fine and does not squeak. The hard top is in place now for the winter. Only time will tell if it continues to work as expected when next summer arrives.

The 996 cab mechanism scares me more than the ims crap. The boxsters top is so much better in comparison .

I've never had a problem with my Cab mechanism even after replacing the canvas a few years ago.

Actually, WD-40 is a bad choice. Is leaves a residual in the areas that cannot be wiped clean of over-spray. The remaining WD-40 is like a dirt magnet. The best choice by far is Dry TEFLON. It's amazing stuff. It can, (and should be) sprayed into your door lock, ignition keyway, all hinging parts such as doors, wiring harness and on and on. It will not hold dirt, unlike silicone it can be painted. It is heat resistant-up to 500 degrees........ It's the ****.
