Video Screech on startup (intermittent)

Hello all!

Once in a while (i.e. every tenth start or so), I get the following awful sound right after startup:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMs3ieE81oQ

This video is not mine - it's from another youtube user, but it's exactly the same sound.

Could it be that a new starter is needed? Or do I need to clean/lube something back there?

Any help would be appreciated!

Dave

It's your starter....you can remove/clean and reinstall or buy new one...better off getting a new one
You'll have to remove a few things to get to it...in sorta in the middle under the intake runners..I'm sure someone has a diagram with exact location

Starter is on its way out... anytime now. Replacement rebuilt unit is fairly inexpensive. Trade yours in for a Core get some $$$ Back

Yup, starter. I had mine replaced a few years ago--got raped by the dealer.

Yep, cost me an equiv of USD$800 to fix at a Porsche dealer in Japan. Interestingly though, as a side benefit my "vampire electronics" battery drain seemed to have mysteriously disappeared after the starter motor replacement.

Thanks!

Wow... thanks everybody for the feedback.

I'm taking this to my local mechanic... any idea on the cost of this? Parts seems to be around $120-$150... maybe one or two hours labor? I'm thinking $350 max?

Different Sound on start up

I have a strange sound too.

It happens about 10 seconds after startup, lasts only a second or two and it sounds like something is rubbing, yet more of a 'hum.' I thought it might be the spoiler that has re-engaged, as the timing seems close to that dash light. I have the aero kit rear wing spoiler, so the stock is disconnected.

Thanks,

Jay

Labor is about 2 hours as it sits under the intake manifold so the center plenum needs to be removed. Retail on the starter is about $400, so you will just have to work with your shop to see if they will let you supply the parts.

Question Could it have been the battery all along???

Okay, this is really weird...

Earlier this week my car was dead... it was the battery. Jumped it, and drove it to my mechanic who put in a new interstate battery.

Since then, I have not heard this screeching sound at all. Perhaps it's just dumb luck, and I'll hear it in the next few days, but so far it seems that perhaps it's not the starter at all?

Does that make any sense? If my old battery was on it's way out, could that explain itermittent screeching on startup?

Dave

It's 100% the starter. I got mine from Pelican Parts. Installed it myself. It was a bit of a pain in the butt to change but saved on paying someone to do it.

I'm interested to hear if the sound returns... It could just be dumb luck I guess, if the battery was supplying just enough juice to start the engine, but the starter was not being fully powered it could make strange noises from time to time. Kind of a leap but stranger things can (and do) happen.
