Thanks Sharky. I'm really happy with this unit so far. A/F at idle is 14.7, exactly the same as stock. That's pretty impressive. I have noticed that when I let off the gas after full throttle that the AF soars to 21. I'm sure it's normal, but it freaked me out a little bit. This unit gives a good idea of what's going on under the bonnet.
I'm still not really sure what I'm supposed to do with the Lamda reading or the EGT reading. This is all pretty new to me. Not sure what I should be looking for with those if things get ugly.
All they have left to do now is wire in the RPM sensor from the ECU to the sending unit and it's done. Bert Smith Motorsports in St. Pete did a great job on the install. It was tough finding a good place for that gauge. They ended up taking a tape holder, removing the tape inserts, filling and painting it. Gave a nice flat surface to mount the gauge on to. It would have been cool to flush it out behind that panel, but the unit is too big and the we didn't want to risk ruining it by dissasembling the display from the case.
Update on the silicone hoses. Their testing is just about complete, but it will be about 2 months before they are in production and available.

hey d dog,
the silicon hoses replace all the roto-molded parts?
BTW, looking good with the gauges. the AiM MXL pista i am getting is more of a race track data logger but will also do boost, EGT, AFR. think i'll just monitor my AFR thru my OBDII scanner instead.

the silicone hoses are replacing the top and bottom hoses that under boost. the long intake one that runs along the bumper will remain the same. that one's not too critical as it's just intake.
carlos, your booost should be around 6psi max.
i'm new to this data logging etc, but will your obd scanner give you the same precision as a wideband 02 sensor. even the porsche computer can't read AF ratios, just fuel trim readings, which is similar from what i've been told.
what else does that AIM unit do? the zeitronix data logs to a laptop as well. may save you a few bucks if the AIM unit doesn't do much more than that. the zeitronix will log boost, egt, lampda, AF, TPS, rpm, and a user defined setting. The whole package with sensors was around $500.

not sure if the scanner does wide band. i'll have to check.
i think i am making more than 6PSI
but i want to confirm.the aim unit is a true track data acquisition system less of an engine tuning tool. it's more of a driver tool.
-RMP
-speed
-gear position - calculated or though potentiometer
-programmable shift lights.
-lateral and longitudinal G's
-lap times/ split times/ presumptive lap times
-additional speed sensor (to calculate wheels slip front/back, shock settings....
-GPS
-programmable alarms
-customizable display/dash
-odometer
-8MB of memory
-has 8 analog channels for various sensors:
-throttle position
-brake position
-steering position
-pressures - boost, oil pressure
-temps - oil, water, ambient, engine, EGT, intake
-AFR
-can make your own programmable sensors
-data download to a computer.
-though the software - plotting any and all of the above including, track drawing/plotting, g-sum graphs...
it's a very comprehensive data logger plus dash. i'm initially setting it up for RPM, speed, oil pressure, water temp, intake manifold boost, post intercooler intake temps and setting alarms for oil pressure and water temp and of course lap times. later i'll add throttle/steering/brake position.
ya it's not 500 bucks. it's 1600+ but it does a helluva lot more and since i've become a track junkie i am convincing myself that i need all this stuff
. hey, company stock is up and i wanted to reward myself
.
wow, that's pretty cool. lots of bells and whistles
i like it.
why set it up for speed, rpm, water temp, and oil pressure since you already have that on your stock dash? wouldn't it be more helpful to put stuff on there you can't monitor?
where are you going to put that? it'd be slick if you could fiberglass over the stock dash (something removeable) and flush that in where the dash would normally be.
why do you think you're making more than 6 psi? do you have an extra small pulley on there? careful with that if you are. i'm not sure the software really has the flexibility to maintain the proper parameters with the higher boost levels. could be experiencing a lot more wear and tear for an extra 15-20 hp. especially when your talking extended beatings at the track

i am mounting it as a temporary dash in front of the oem dash. mine is not a permanent install, although it can easily be. you see them all the time on cup cars. the RPM graph is standard, so is speed so you really have no choice. it's easier to monitor especially when the backlight is on. instead of looking down close to the radio, it's in my face. i can set up alarms for water temp, pressure etc., and i can get a numerical value rather than "it's between 180 and 250". kinda vague isn't it? i have 8 channels for sensors, rpm and speed do not count. remember this is a data logger not just a dash so not only can i monitor as i am driving i can see the effects of Gs in a turn on oil pressure, for instance, after downloading the data to my laptop.
i'll post pics when the dash is finally on.
the programming does have the flexibility, why would you think otherwise, just a hunch
? do you really think it is programmed to the max without any headroom? i'm sure it is a wear issue with EVO so they probably de-tuned the kits. with all the track miles i have done and will be doing, i expect to rebuild the engine at 100K (i am at 80K) with beefed up parts anyway. gonna start doing the homework. maybe when the time comes todd will have the parts already.

Sometimes when I go through the list of files in search mode for flashing I am amazed at how many he has created for 996's, 997s, TT's, CayenTT's, 490-1000HP, 2X, 3X and Superchargers.... And all of them idle as they should and hit stoich on queue (14.7). If you let off the gas don't worry that's absolutely normal. Your idle should be stoich and very important that under heavy boost and full throttle and high rpms' that your AFR's are mid 12s on 91. The other thing that amazed me was that the GT640 kit passed Cali smog!EGT's are great as you can also see when things get too hot (or of course if there's a tuning issue). I'm actually not sure what the EGT's are meant to be... Different cars, kits etc...

I like the look of it. I ended up getting the PLX kit for my 930. See ya soon!
you'll have to keep us posted on what your boost turned out to be. nope, not a hunch. have had several conversations with EVO, my installer, and some tuners on this very topic of running more boost. you probably won't be able maintain stock AF ratios running much higher than normal boost with the current software. could cause problems for you down the road, but sounds like you're ready for a rebuilid anyway
that logger you bought sounds awesome. if i was doing any track time, sounds like that would be the unit to get. mine will only datalog the basics. i could see where that other stuff would come in handy if you were trying to shave lap times down some.
post up your boost and AF levels when you get that logger hooked up. if you can maintain stock AF ratios with higher than normal boost, i may consider going that route myself. although right now my car is running really well (knock on wood) and making a lot of power. not sure i want to risk it for another 15 or so HP.

ya the reliability of using more boost is still an unknown but at least we know at the 'regular' boost they are reliable. sharky has a customer with an SC who beats the hell out of it on the track. i met him at sears point and the only problems he's had was a hot engine but NOT necessarily related to the SC. just 100+ degree days at the track. he said he just kept running it even though the water temp was pegged at max. his experiences made me a believer in the m96 engine + SC and prompted me to get the smaller pulley. i'll have to talk to todd again about the software issue you mentioned. when i ordered the smaller pulley he didn't mention any software problems. todd did say maybe 8PSI
i'm gonna get the car dynoed soon so we can all see 1) what kind of power it is making 2) the AF ratios. i may just wait after i get the boost sensor installed so i can overlay it with the dyno data. i definitely want to make sure everything is kosher before my next track event in late january.

it's not necessarily a software problem, but from what i understand you're just going to start operating outside stock parameters with the higher than designed boost levels. i'm really impressed with the whole package so far. the fact that we can maintaint stock AF ratios at idle and full boost is a testament to the quality of the programming.
now you got me curious. hurry up and get that stuff installed
keep us posted on what you find out.

couple new issues so far. well, issues may be a strong word, but some things that may need to be addressed.
did a higway run yesterday with the datalogger. started in 2nd and ran to redline in each gear through 5th. chickened out after that
with the exception of some small boost spikes when i let off the throttle, i'm only maintain about 5psi of boost under full throttle near redline. seems a lit low to me. i was under the impression when i bought this kit that it should be running 5.5 to 6. so maybe there's room left for a smaller pully. still maintaining that 12.5 AF ratio with an EGT of about 1050 at max boost. that's a good thing.
second and not so fun issue, got my first check engine light today. oddly enough while not even beating on the car. drove the hell out of it yesterday and it didn't miss a beat. got CEL codes:
P0491 and P0492
From what I have been told, that translates into a problem with secondary air system banks 1 and 2, respectively.
Not sure what this means. My installer didn't seem to concerned. He said this is a common CEL with the EVO kits. The car is still running fine.

sux about the CEL but hey, you are still running. i wonder if will cause any problems in the long run or is it a "out of range" sort of indication.
hmmm... i was under the impression that the 3.4L kits ran more boost than the 3.6L kits, hence the larger pulley on the 3.6L kits. i confirmed the pulley size difference with todd. supposed to run 4.5~5 psi. at first i wanted to run the bigger 3.6 pulley for less boost, to save the engine (todd said that was ok too), but in the end i went even smaller than the standard 3.4 pulley.
-BUT-
you should double check with todd/mike, of course. maybe your belts are just slipping.
