Noise Reduction

I think I'm getting old. When I jump in my 911 after driving my MDX, the 911 feels feels and sounds like a tractor

In all seriousness I'm at a point now where I want the car to be a little more quiet. I noticed the driver window was misaligned which explains some of the wind leak and figure they didn't put much sound insulation in as the focus was on keeping it light.

Next Tuesday I'm having the window realigned to sit correctly in the rubber seal and having Dynamat applied to the doors (shell and inner frame), rear shelf area, under the rear seats and on the floor. Will report back on whether I wasted my money.

I may even ditch the modified mufflers and go back to stock.

Any other quiet down tips?

I believe that a ton of noise comes in from the wheels at the wheel wells. Dynamat on the body around the rear wheels might help.

Great, thanks for the tip. Yeah, I'm hoping the side panels that house the rear speakers can be popped off easily enough. If so I'll have that area covered too. The rear tires in particular are wide and deliver quite a bit of noise. For the record I'm not looking to create a Lexus or to neuter the Porsche. I want to hear the induction noise and the exhaust to an extent. But right now it is a few dbs too many in wind noise and tire noise.

Comfort "touring" tires but then you might as well trade in your car for a Lexus.

I have a cab and its even noisier than a coupe. I put some Dynamat in the doors and in the panel behind the rear seat. Helped a bit. Let us know if those rear panels come out easily. I may put some back there as well.

I have a 996 TT - I covered the inside with Dynamat. It didn't make a bit of difference. These cars are very well soundproofed. Focus on exhaust and tires if you want to reduce environmental noise.

As mentioned focus on the muffler and tires. I have heard some people remove the rear seats and replace or add more sound proffing there, high density material.
But as mentioned, these are sports cars and are normally louder than other cars, even stock.

Have you loooked to ensure you don't have a hole in the muffler? I'm running PSE hack and to be honest it's not that loud when cruising.

Good luck

I don't know about the N/A 996, but the TT has very good stock soundproofing in the rear area. The foam/rubber under the carpet is about an inch thick. Adding Dynamat doesn't help at all.

Thanks for the replies. Not
expecting a miracle at this point. I think the doors will benefit a bit. I do agree it's the tires and exhaust. My exhaust has the Fister and PSE hack. May have one pipe closed off as I'm sure
3/4 of the flow is unmuffled. My current tires are 285/30s, may go with 285/35s with a less aggressive type (non UHP)
for a little more cushion and likely less noise.

My father complains about the noise of my 996, he always lifts up the rear seats in an effort to quieten down the engine/exhaust noise... I tell him to enjoy it!

Dynamat will make a world of difference though.

IMO dynamat makes a fair bit of difference in reducing noise.

I'd put it in the rear of the cabin under the carpet. I'd say you would get some improvement

Yes, Daynamat is great. I used it in my G35 a few years back. I couldn't believe the difference.

I've already done it - I did my 996 TT last year. Total waste of cash. No effect.

Interesting, I used it in a vintage Mercedes I had awhile back and it was great.

Admittedly I haven't put any in my 996...

Well we will find out Tuesday. Blanketing the doors and any areas under the carpet that is reasonably easy to pull up.

I'll put stock mufflers back on for a while too since I have spares.

It's interesting how definitively positive and negative the feedback is. "Yes it works.." And "no it won't".

What about the frunk area? The hood is naked and there is nothing under the trunk carpet?
