I had an '01 M3 and thought it was a great car. I made a mistake and sold the car to get a C6 Vette that I kept for 14 months. I now drive a Porsche CaymanS and it is the best handling car I have ever been in. I didn't come on here to knock the M3. I still think it is a great car. I just think the Porsche line is better with more styling and a better fit/finish (although the shifter in my M3 was the absolute best I have ever experienced....like a hot knife through butter). As far as performace goes, in a straight line race it would all come down to the driver. On a road course, the Porsche will eat it's lunch.
I apology, I was mistaken, you weren't the one that made that comment. Fit and finish, lets not go there, seriously. 997 on the other hand is a differenty story when it comes to that department. As far as looks and the porsche eating the m3's lunch, it all depends on who's cooking.

As for the difference of the M3 and GT3..
Put it this way..
I had 3 hookers in my car last weekend..I could only fit one in the GT3..
The GT3 is an AMAZING car car but not as a DD...
Here is the color after a ZYMOL job..

both are nice vehicles, I would give the nod to an M3 over a "regular" 996 though.

i kinda agree with that. i think when u see the m3 its like oooh an m3 it looks agressive. with a 911 though, u see it and think OMG that thing is hot! it looks agressive as well and just hits you hard in the looks dept. then the sounds and speed come when you turn the key or watch one drive away.

yup... nothing sounds like a 911 accelerating away... especially with a high end aftermarket exhaust like PSE or Gemballa !!

Techart also sounds nice... PSE for the 3.4 sounds better than the 3.6 PSE (IMO)... more raspy and exotic... the 3.6 PSE is more throaty (but still very very nice!!)

RUF also sounds kickass... and so does Gemballa...

I have a friend with a 997 and champion exhaust... I think the Gemballa sounds more "porsche-like" than the champion... but the champion is certainly a new refreshing sound for the porsches...

yes techarts are supposed to sound good. tubi on the 997 sounds exactly like the gemballa on my car. also supersprint is well known for good sounding exhausts. PSE always is a fav for obvious reasons. they sound great! i have not heard champions, but they make quality stuff so i would imagine it sounds good as well.

I owned both the 2001 E46 M3 and now the 2000 996 C2. I prefer the Porsche much more.

The E46 M3 has a very metallic and whiny sound to it.

Even though the M3 has 333hp, the 996 C2 drives better and feels faster. To me the E46 M3 drove and felt like a very fast sedan, but the 996 drives completely differently feels more like it's on rails- a real sports car.

Also the E46 M3 engines had known bearing issues that will cause the crankshaft to slide and cylinders to denotate (which is what happened to my car 6 month into owning it after buying it new).
