Power Steering Noise
Power Steering Noise
Pulled out of my driveway this morning, and heard what sounded like a tire rubbing on something. I drove to the end of the street, pulled over, and in doing so realized the noise was proportional to how much I turned the steering wheel. With the wheel straight, the sound was minimal. On a turn, however, it was loud. I drove in to work, and as the car heated up, the noise was not that noticable (temps outside are a comfortable 60 F). Did not yet check any fluids since I was running late. Will check my drivway when I get home to see if there is an oil leak. Probably either a leaking hose, or the power steering pump is shot. Either way, I didnt expect this at 18K miles.
had something very similar last month. pulled out of my driveway and when I cut the wheel to turn it made a loud noise. Drove down the street and made a left and the same thing. after the car got hot it went away.
next time I drove the car it did the same thing but this time it did not go away. also, sitting at a light it would make the same noise if i revd the car a bit, or simply turned the wheel the tone of the noise would change.
Drove by my indy shop and asked what he thought. he asked if i had noticed if the clutch has been acting funny lately and after some thought there were a few times where it almost felt like i was starting with the car in 3rd gear instead of first.
he checked the power steering fluid and it was bone dry. he also said that the power steering is connected to the clutch somehow. he said it was a warranty fix so i brought it to the dealer. sure enough it was clutch related and they fixed it. no problem. check your power steering fluid.

Also it could be a belt tensioner pulley bearing. That happened to me and was diagnosed as the PS pump. After changing it, the sound remained and that's when we found out it was the pulley bearing. Happened at less than 20,000 miles.
Thanks

I have actually noticed some creaking, but I also had the brop links reversed at the same time, and assumed the drop links were the source of the noise.
