Replace sport Chrono?
Replace sport Chrono?
So I realize this might be sacrilege - but I think like most I NEVER use the sport chrono chronograph. Other than making sure it worked. All I really care about is overboost - Are people or have people either.
997.1 turbo
1. Replaced it with a functional gauge, I would prefer boost since frankly the factory "Gauge" is useless when tuned.
or
2. Replaced it with an upgraded unit that actually functions as a clock as well?
All I'd really like is some useful functionality out of it rather than an expensive looking dash wart. I'd be totally happy with an ACTUAL clock in there, maybe that's what I should do, try to find a nice little 60mm automatic clock to put in there

You can install an Aeroforce Intercceptor OBD-ii Guage in the sport chrono housing. Can have it display boost & a/f ratio or any other combo that the gauge support. That's what I did with my wart housing.
pics?
Thats a great idea! How did you wire it? More info please
Wiring was easy. It just powers up with power and ground. I'll post pics when I get some free time

How does the gauge read the boost and AFR? Do you need to weld a bung for the censor? Or can you tap into the wiring harness/ obd?
reading off OBD will result in the same useless info that is displayed on the dash as far as I know, you'd need a real pressure sensor, probably coming off the FPR. As for AFR, not sure you might be able to use the OBD info for that. just not sure how accurate it is on the porsche.
You need to weld a bung on the exhaust and run a vacuum line to the gauge also.
I beg to differ. If that's true, then COBB and their Pro-Tuners are in trouble.

Someone posted about this the other day, Let me see if I can find the post.

post 8 - now that would seem to indicate that with the stock sensor it might be correct though.

Well,.. the dash will only read to 17 psi,.. and the sensor itself gets saturated after 22.6 or thereabouts.
ECU's are able to map a bit above that as it can estimate the scaling above that boost level, as it mainly uses the MAF for fuel,.. and the all-important fuel pressure is done via a hose from the manifold to the FPR anyway.
But for sure the dash readout is useless. A real gauge would be nice.
In my last car I paid more attention to it in vacuum. I knew that at idle I should be pulling 18-20 inches of vacuum. If I wasn't (with the car at warm idle) I knew I was developing a boost leak and it was time to have a look-see under the hood.
Interesting info. Yes, so an OBD-II gauge reader can give you a relatively accurate reading, perhaps not as exact as a dedicated boost gauge, but close? I guess if you're going above 22.7 psi, then the OBD-II may not be accurate anymore?
what is displayed in "boost" I believe is incorrect on the AP, they have set up a different table which measures actual pressure, not just relative - the simple ODB output would just be of the MAP sensor if it shows it at all. What you're reading on the AP is more than just what would output to an ODB type gauge.
