I think I finally found my 997! Good deal or not?

Hey guys, after looking and waiting long and hard, I think I finally found the one. Here are the specs and please let me know what your thoughts are and what I should do to make sure the car is right! I know it is a first year, but appreciate other members thoughts on their experiences and what to expect/look for and what not.

05, 39k miles, black on black, leather seats package with sport steering wheel, Carrera S 19s, Bose, Xenons, cd changer cleannn and good record.

Around $46-47k

Thoughts and input would be greatly apprecited?

Thank you all very much!

Also any special rates? Heard Pentagon might be the most reasonable?

Does it come with a CPO or factory warranty? Theres many other questions you need to ask.

this is a carrera or a carrera s? what was the msrp of the car? car is about 4 years old with about 10k miles/yr-assume it was a carrera with msrp of 80k-it probably sold for mid 70's. the price is not bad then-i would say that most important thing to do is very careful examination by a porsche dealer not affiliated with the car-if that checks out, you have a good car. good luck.

I think that it is a Carrera. He specifically listed the Carrera S 19" wheels as an option.

I have mixed sentiment about buying a high mileage Porsche . 39K is not alot of miles in a DIFFERENT car but on a Porsche it means depreciation . Just replacing routine wear items like brakes, tires, clutch as well as the 60K service make the car less attractive . Add up all those things and now an 06 C2S (upper 50's) with less than 10K miles looks great.

On the other hand you have seen the car and spoken in detail with the owner .

As much as i would like to see you get the car I have spoken to many who have dreamt of having the car only to buy a used one at a financial stretch and face repairs which flush out all the fun .

If the car is an S .
If the guy has all the service records . Look at what the specific problems were .
See if he can break 45K OR replace the brakes and tires for that 46K.

I still would pass but it sounds like you are bitten . Drive the car , look at every detail and think it over very carefully .

well

Thanks for all the feedback.. It is indeed a reg Carrera and the owner is a past porsche sales guy who said he could "hook me up" with resources ie service discounts, parts, etc. Anyhow, I am worried about the higher mileage...are there any first year issues/problems with the 997 that I need to look out for? Also, what is the price for an extended warranty? We have agreed to have the car checked out by porsche before the purchase, but i agree, I will try to get him down to 45-46k.

It sounds like you really want this car .
1) A verbal agreement with seller about future potential service needs is not exactly the same thing as placing those new parts on the car on the day you buy it .
2) High mileage is an issue . I say this all the time .If this was a Honda with 39K I would call it a new car but not with Porsche . I'm not saying this because the car would have problems but I am saying it because schedueled routine repair is not cheap .
3) I don;t know the cost of extended warranty . I did buy one twice on former Porsches and the first one paid itself and the second did not . I don;t keep my Porsches more than the 4 year 50K mark anymore.
4) Inspection is good .

You really want this car don't you . Just be sure that you have thioyght every good thing about it as well as the bad . Balance the emotional reasoning .

Best wishes with the car.

I wouldn't worry about the milage, cars (especially Porsche's) were made to be driven. I have a friend with a 993 C2 his car has about 115,000 miles, no problems at all. At the High 40's buy it! Brakes are easy to do yourself, and the rest of the stuff (belts) will need to be changed sooner or later on a low milage car due to age.

Buy and drive the **** out of it...I can guarantee that you will have fun doing it.

Of course they are meant to be driven but have you ever faced the expense if a new clutch ? It's nine hours of labor plus the parts . Then off course there's all the other things you mention which do add up.

The used car shopper usually wants ro save money . If he begins has car experience with cost in mind why would he want to pay the same as if he bought a newer car to replace parts over time ?

I can think of at least 10K worth of things which he would pay if he did not do the work hiimself . In fact he even asked about extended warranty --that's got to be about 3K right out of the box.

I am not saying the 39K 3 year old car is a bad car . I am saying it may appear like a great value but factor in those hidden expenses and that changes things .
