Creaking noise from sunroof

Happens only when I am going up or down from a grade, like into or out of a parking lot entrance. Sounds like a loud groaning, creaking noise.

Searched the forums here and only found one post related to creaking sunroof noise.

Anyone had this before on their 996/997? Is this normal due to the fairly rigid nature of our cars? Boucned it off a service advisor and he said there might be things they could do but they all sounded pretty radical, like fixing the spot weld on the roll bar area.

I only get this loud creak noise when going over a up/down grade that causes upward or downward flex on the car - never hear it going over speed bumps, road bumps, etc.

sounds like the dealer just does not want to fix it! Spot welds??? WTF! My sunroof started creaking at 150 miles. The leading edge was making the noise. I opened and closed it about a dozen times, cleaned the wax off the leading edge, put some detailer spray around the whole lip of the panel, and it quieted down immediately. When I was looking at the mechanism, it seemed to me that there were about 100 points where it could make noises. I decided that if it started creaking again, I would suspect an alignment issue. The chassis will not be flexing enough to cause a major displacment in this area. There are cars that are far less rigid that the 911 that have quiet sunroofs.

+1. I have the same creaking noise when crossing unevenly matched grades -- say from a street onto a ramp for a parking lot. Or vice versa. And it's LOUD. Kinda comes from the rear window area as well as roof/sunroof. Bugs the crap out of me. Not quite sure what the fix might be for this problem.

Hey guys I had the same issue, my SA sprayed the seal around the roof and the noise stopped, I'm sorry but I can't remember exactly what the spray was perhaps some kind of dry lubricant.

I have that problem in my 996tt, it's the support between the headliner and the roof. It feels like plastic struts that keep the headliner taught. The squeaking is barely noticeable with the sunroof closed.. when opened it becomes annoying.

This is interesting. There have been all sorts of criticisms from coupe owners about how the Targa tops creak and groan. Now it appears that some coupes suffer from the same issue. And it sounds like the same cause: minor flexing of weatherstrips on the sunroofs. The fix seems the same too: apply some silicone spray to the rubber surfaces. I usually spray a generous amount onto a rag and wipe the rubber strips at front and back of the sunroof. I have had to do it only a few times in the past year, as the problem is quite infrequent on my Targa. Sometimes all I need to do is slightly open and close the roof and it goes away.

In my experience the creaking is normally caused by the tight seal created by the edges of the sunroof. I know that Audi sells a special lubricant that's designed for rubber door mouldings and sunroofs. I'm sure Porsche sells something similar. I would try thorougly cleaning all the edges of the sunroof, both on the car and the sunroof itself, first....then check with the dealer about the lubricant.

That is EXACTLY what happens on my car. I didn't know quite how to word it, but this is a better description. Whenever I cross uneven grades it creaks/groans quite loudly.

But never when the sunroof is open, only when it is closed.

And, I had never opened my sunroof the first month I owned the car and didnt hear this noise. It seemed to only start after I opened the sunroof and closed it for the first time.

I will definitely see if my SA will spray the seal with some kind of lubricant, see if that helps.

I had this exact noise when I bought my car back in November. Took it to the dealer, and he lubed the seals around the roof (after taking a ride with me so I could duplicate the problem for him -- crossing uneven grades from street to driveway, etc.) and the noise went away.

Roof has been quiet for 6 months now.

I have the same problem. I told the dealer about it, but did not do a drive with the tech and they said they could not duplicate the noise I am going to try to do the silicone spray technique on the sunroof seal. I always thought it was coming from the right rear window area.

Matt - try getting them to have your service tech to ride with you. It makes all the difference in the world for you to be able to say "hear that, that's the noise I'm complaining about" versus to have them tell you "we cannot duplicate the problem". It seems like most techs (Porsche or otherwise) are content to respond back with "no problem found" than to take the time in diagnosing the problem.

Went to the dealer yesterday and had the foreman ride along to hear the sunroof creak right on the first driveway entrance into the dealer. They put on some sort of silicone seal/lube as requested and while not entirely gone it's a lot quieter.

So I'm just living with it as is. My shifting seat is now the last gremlin I need to chase out.
