I have 997 carrera 4s 2008 1.generation manual transmition with multifunction steering wheel.
I bougth multifunction steearin wheel 2010. Its plug and play lights on wheel works but multifunction buttons doesnt. Suncoastparts told me that i have to buy control unit too (because the steering wheel is 2.gen and i have 1.gen 997) but they want tell me the part number od control unit.
I have some questions?
1. Who knows the part number of control unit?
2. After installing control unit do i need any activication or programing from Porsche

Steering Wheel upgrade in a 997.2 6spd to .. an update.
The new style multi-function and heated wheel has arrived (from Suncoast) and is awaiting install (with new controller and clock spring assembly and new airbag), in my 2009 997.2 6spd Targa (to replace the XPA extra thick sports wheel).
now I'm almost looking forward to a cold winter to really enjoy the heated wheel.... its amazing how the prospect of a lack of pain is an enticing thing.
Current XPA wheel in stone grey:

New Multifunction/Heated 6spd wheel (black trim on grey):

So will anyone be needing a stone gray non-pdk plain old XPA (fat and nice as hell but cold in the winter if you live up north) wheel or maybe the airbag out of sports wheel?
I guess like furniture fabric, even 'Stone Gray' varies from year to year.... the color is a bit brighter than the gray airbag of the current wheel (the current wheel rim is darker from oils being absorbed over 2.5 yrs, but not the airbag cover)

THx kaz for the write up,just finish the mfw install work nice I love it,I didnt have to take off the wheel, but the rivet at 3 n 9 o'clock was *****...pdk switch work exccept the mtf, wait for tuesday to program at the dealer
I'm not sure. For the 997.1 style wheels like you have, I don't think there was a multifunction option. The first runs of 997.2 cars with sports wheels in 2008/09 came with the 997.1 round style wheels. Hence I went with the full wheel upgrade.
Now whether a 997.2 new style sports wheel with multifunction can be installed on your car (a 997.1) thats a question someone with more 997.1 experience would have to answer, since there can be controller differences and there are PCM differences etc.

Sound complicated and may cost more than it's worth. I'm happy with my wheel, most because of what's attached to it!!!
Wanted the MF for my new head unit I want to put in...but I can reach for the button anyway...no sweat.
Thanks for the help!!

Is your car a 2009 997.2 6spd? I am confused.. it looks like you had the older 997.1 style xpa sports wheel and then you replaced it with the newer 997.2 multi-function wheel? Did it fit OK?
My car is a 2009 997.2 6spd with the standard triangle middle wheel (similar to the 997.1 wheel).
I don't need/want multi-function, just a fatter wheel with nice leather.
Do you still have that wheel & airbag?

I don't have the wheel anymore (sold it already) but do still have the airbag, controller module and old slip-ring. I"m throwing i the controller and slipring for free if anyone wants the airbag.
The MY2009 997.2 6-spd manual, with XPA option did come with that very wheel - it was the 997.1 XPA design. I upgraded that wheel fully to the 997.2 modern 6spd wheel with multifunction and heat (the old XPA wheel had neither, but he car already had heated seats). The install was easy and things work as they should.
I'm told that if you have PDK and/or flappy-paddle control, things are not drop in easy (eg flappy paddle can be exclusive-or to heated wheel.. you can have one or the other but not both).
If you don't want multifunction nor heated wheel, then you should be able to drop in a 997.1 XPA wheel no problems.
The kit for $549. is for the first generation steering wheel with triangular airbag, made for manual or tiptronic transmissions (2005-2010).
The kit for $279. is for the 2009+ PDK steering wheels.
Currently there isn't a multifunction retrofit kit available for the 2010 manual steering wheels, we're working on that kit.

However, now that I've had mine installed for about 9 months, I can say there is definitely value, just in terms of security. Being able to quickly adjust the volume up or down or mute, without having to take my eye's off the traffic in front to locate the volume **** has been great (especially given my MP3 dvd hasn't had the songs volume normalized yet so they vary in level from track to track sometimes).
Being able to zoom the nav map in and out with the left thumb has been superb... that left **** on the PCM is even further away, and being able to easily zoom in to get intersection level data (to be able to read cross street names at a glance) and then zoom out to look longer distance for relative distance to go to a turn off or upcoming town... its very nice to have. All with both hands still being on the wheel.
The phone answer/hangup buttons, I've not used much yet. I don't get a lot of calls in the car, but even there, if in motion, its nice to not get distracted to look for that button on the PCM.
Having had it for 9 months, for me, its absolutely worth the $500+ dollars.
Its all relative. Not having one, it certainly feels like its a lot of money for a seeming trivial convenience. I initially wanted the controls soley for the one button that is user programmable so I could set it to be 'screen off' and thus one-click off the PCM screen (on a 997.2 there was no longer a button for that on the PCM).

Guys... I have the factory MF wheel on my 08 Targa.
What does it actually do in terms of practicality? I like the volume control but every time you have to do something with PCM, you have to scroll through the screens to confirm then select.
Did I miss something? Thanks!
