Holy Cow

Couldn't sleep so I just read the blog. Now I'm going to have nightmares!

Hard to believe there are so many catastrophic failures at such low miles.

Condolences to Cattman. Best of luck on the rebuild. Look forward to reading about it.

Document Everything

Might not be happening now but you never know what might happen in the future. This could very well end up going through the court system as a class action. Anecdotally, there seems to be enough instances out there where one could claim that this was an inherent manufacturer's defect - a costly one at that. When/if it happens, they'll probably want those within the class to demonstrate they deserve to be compensated (i.e. you had a car with the alleged defect).

Interestingly, Excellence magazine recently did one of those "buyers guide" write-ups on the 996/997 models. Now I like the mag, they do great how-to articles, testing, racing coverage, etc., but in the "what to look for" portion of the article they essentially glossed over what appears to be a serious issue. I'm not questioning their overall journalistic integrity (to the extent such exists in an enthusiast car mag) but I think the omission of a critical assessment of this apparent design flaw in this context (a buyers guide) was unfortunate.

I've seen other manufacturers with similar scenarios. Generally after a class action is filed the issue is resolved by 1) fixing those that had the issue and 2) offering a 10 year warranty from date of purchase for everyone else against the issue in question. It really doesn't cost them much to do this and it saves face.

Well, here is the latest:

Option 1: Buy a "remanufactured" 2006-2008 3.8L Carrera S Engine for about $12k, and pay an indy about $2k for installation. No warrantee. I can keep the dead engine.

Option 2: Buy a new motor from the dealer for $12k (a special rate given a unique buying relationship) plus pay dealer to install it, estimated to be 21 hours, or roughly $2,500. This would include a 2 year warrantee on the engine, unlimited miles, but I have to give them my dead engine.

Leaning towards Option 2...

Are you 100% sure that option 2 is truly a brand new engine?

I think it is also a reman from Porsche with a 2 year warranty.

Getting my engine to TPC for something special is another option, but honestly, after blowing up one of these damn things I don't want to risk another, and will most likely get a dedicated track car down the road, and keep this one as my DD. Looks like I am going the conservative route- boooo!

Once my warranty ends it will be time to move on to another 911. That being said I still think the IMS/RMS is blown way out of proportion. Speaking with my dealerships mechanic he has done one IMS in the last 5 years, and that was on a 996.

Wow I am sorry to hear about your engine! It just happens I was worrying about the IMS issue with my 996 vf supercharged engine and was talking to casey earlier today and he pointed me to this thread. Im already pass 65k on my engine without any problems but hearing your story makes me def want to do the IMS upgrade! Good luck with your repairs!
