Question Is something wrong with me PSE?

Hi there

I've noticed what sounds like a rattle and very raspy sound, especially when I blip the throttle, almost sounds like a rattle or the noise an E46 M3 makes, very raspy.

Its very noticable when sport is not on, with sport on its less noticable due to more noise but still very audible on blips of the throttle.

With PSE unplugged its hardly noticable, I don't recall noticing this before.

Is this normal or is maybe a clamp or the PSE failing/degrading in some way?

This is why I do not subscribe to exhausts with moving flaps - another thing to go wrong, and it does go wrong, just a question of time. Same for the multi intake flaps on the X51 kit.

You may have a part inside the muffler that has come loose, or perhaps the muffler is hitting another part of the pipe.

If it is the later, you can get a hose clamp and tighten it down on the pieces to hold them together.

Ah OK, I assume Porsche warranty covers the PSE and they will fix it for free?

Most likely spot on.

My '05 had a rattle that got worse over time. Took it to the dealer and they said the internal welds were broken and it was beyond repair.

They did offer to sell me a new PSE for $1800 installed.

CPO did not cover it.

In retrospect I would just take it to a muffler shop, have them cut the cans open and repair the welds.

Apparently this is a known problem with early 997.1s

Ahoy there.

Right I've had a good look tonight. This is what I've discovered:-

1. It does not do it when cold.
2. One of the brackets is cracked (picture below)
3. Hitting parts of the exhaust with a rubber hammer shows the baffles to have no loose bits but the right hand side of the tips seem to resonate heavily with baffles shut.
4. So exhaust in sport mode, no/little resonance.
5. Exhaust in quiet mode lots of resonance in right hand side tips.
6. Car off with actuators still closed, lots of resonance, about 2 minutes after shutting car down these open and it seems to go.

As such I am diagnosing this as I have two issues, first of all the crack, which needs welding up.

Secondly the actuators in the right hand side seem to be causing resonance as if they were loose kind of sound which would explain the raspyness and its obvious as things warm up they get worse.

So I shall get the crack welded and see how it sounds, then look into the actuators.
Question is how does one get to the actuators, can they be loosened or tightened up or are they just a replace job?

From what I can gather the actuators are actually covered by warranty yes and Porsche will replace?

Picture of crack:-

Try the hose clamp trick I mentioned, save you the trouble of welding.
