IMS Question- please help
2005 Carrera S with 36k***************
I know this has been beat to death on this forum ...just have a few questions. I brought my car in today for an oil change. The mechanic brought my oil filter out and there was two chips of metal in filter. He said that underneath the car was dry which was a good sign but ovb the metal chips in filter was not. He obv suggested doing the IMS from LN. Car has been sitting in the garage for a few weeks and today was just the ride to get the oil changed ( about 35 miles ). The car ran fine with no issues at all ...no strange noises or anything like that.
1) Is there any reason I should be concerned that the engine is damaged in any way?
2) The shop quoted me 2800 bucks to do the IMS bearing and also suggested I might as well do clutch for 900 bucks. Is that a good price?
Please any advice and info would be greatly appreciated . Thanks

1. I don't think you have to worry about engine damage as of yet. The shavings are concerns that the OEM bearing is failing.
2. If you wait for a failure, it will be catastrophic. I'm not sure about the price quote, but I would do the bearing. Clutch, well, with only 36K miles, it's a little soon, no? Depends on when you got the car - if you're the second owner, you don't know how much the previous owner shredded the clutch... Oh, was that the dealership shop or an indy? 2800 seems high, but I have never gotten bids for the job.

I did check...it falls within the class settlement. I bought it used not CPO so im only entitled to 25% of cost?
ok......it is a very reputable place. Just wanted to make sure I wasnt getting hosed lol.
yup, i the engine does blow due to ims and you have to pay the money to get it fixed or a new engine. you'll get back 25% of the replacement cost.
how long have you had the car for? normally people do the clutch swap when doing the ims to save money on labour so that you wont have to pay for the clutch/ims labour twice.

if it falls within the settlement then you have the smaller bearing so you can physically upgrade to the LN bearing. if you dont upgrade the bearing and if your engine fails (from ims) from now until the 10th birthday of your car (based on build date i believe) you will get 25% of the engine fix costs back.
after the 10 year mark and if your have ims failure then porsche will give you nothing back.
i would get the bearing swapped out before the 10th birthday of your car.
if you put like 3.5k miles a year you can probably wait 5-6 years imo to swap the clutch.
