Bass Recommendations?

Hi all - I have a 997.2 with no Bose.

I don't want to change the OEM look of the car and I don't want to add a sub-woofer box anywhere

But, the sound on my sound system is a little bit tinny - I don't need a huge bass - just a little bit more!

Can anybody recommend a set of bass speakers that I could use to swap the OEM speakers that add more power?
and more importantly that are plug and play?

I am a sound system newbie - have only ever bought OEM upgrades in the past.

I am definitely not a Porsche expert, but I used to be big in to car audio back in the day and I can tell you that just swapping out your stock speakers with different speakers isn't going to make a noticeable difference in the sound unless you add some power behind them. In order to get more of a bottom end from your sound system, you'll need to get more power, either through a stand-alone amplifier or a new headunit that has more power.

In order to retain the space and the OEM look, your best bet will be to get a component set and a small amplifier putting out around 100W RMS to each set of speakers. That won't give you a lot of bass, but will remove the tinny sound of the underpowered factory non-Bose system.

When I upgraded the system in my 996, I used Focal speakers and amps. The sound improvement was dramatic. I know that you don't want to add a subwoofer box, but it's the best way to improve bass. I had a custom box installed behind the rear seats and then covered with OE Porsche carpet. It was completely concealed and it looked stock. You might consider something like that.

I believe, Porsche puts a bass speaker in the tunnel near the passengers footwell. Why not just do the same?

I'm looking for a sub too and did think about the Bose sub. But I'm wasn't able to find the information for the following:

- does it have a built-in amplifier or it's just the woofer?
- does it take line or speaker level input?
- if it's just the woofer, what's the impedance?
- if with built-in amplifier, I suppose it requires power too?

And to OP, have you replaced the speakers already? I recently replaced all the 8 speakers (and removed the centre one) in the car and the improvement was huge already.

That's the location of the Bose sub in the cabriolet and targa cars. In coupes, the Bose sub box is behind the rear seats. These subs do require additional amps, if I'm not mistaken.

In short:
The Bose sub has a built in 100w class d amp.
Yes, it needs power and a line in. These may already be in the car, but I have no idea.
I don't know what the interior of a non bose equipped car looks like.

Hi Guys - thanks for the advice - I am aware of the Bose units and that you can modify them to contain a different Subwoofer set-up. Currently thats not what I am intending on doing.

I am OK is with the current non bose & non Subwoofer set-up - I just know that if i change the speakers from the tinny OEM ones - lacking in mid range to my taste and a tick more bass would be nice.

TBH I spend most of my time with the radio off listening to the engine - but when in traffic i like to listen.
