Hello all, just purchased a 2014 vantage and loving it so far. One problem is that it only came with one of the crystal keys and no other keys. I'm very afraid of losing it as there's no good way to carry it except just sliding in my pocket since there's no good way to attach a key ring to it outside getting a pouch I won't use.
My buddy just sold his car that's the same year and said I can have his since he forgot to give it to the deler but there arnt any codes with it so not sure if i can program them or if anyone can. I did purchase a thinkdiag that can program keys but my understanding is that I need to have 2 keys to program a third or have the codes. I called a lock Smith and they said they can do it but charge just to come out and try so has anyone had luck with that? I also keep seeing I could use a volvo key and swap the internals and use the codes to program a second key but see that 30772198 volvo-key is what I need being in the US but I see it has 5 buttons and not 4 like my current key. I can't even locate a key without a crystal for less than 1k just for the key. Is there any way at all to do this outside spending over 1k for a spare key?
please just confirm. After piecing today about 10 threads I buy the 30772198 with codes key,https://www.ebay.com/itm/165794232859?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=5g7CWsQxSr6&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=gFZX0vCTRR G&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
swap the internals with friends extra vantage key( they come with the pill right"
program keys hopefully with thinkdiag if not dealer and I'm good?
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Yes, your description in the end is correct. The Volvo 5 button is the same, AM just doesn't use the panic button on ECU cars. The FOB is the same from 2004.
The ECU keys do contain the immobilizer which program's for engine start. The Volvo program's to the CEM for remote functions. So you could program a start only key also. Make sure you have or buy a mechanical key to add to you spare key kit.

I had a spare key made by a locksmith - they essentially clone your current key. You'll have a spare but you can't program further keys as you need two different keys to do that.
The key fob though you can program with Thinkdiag.

This makes complete sense. I just ordered a new volvo fob and try that approach first since I have a tool to program keys but atleast I know plan b is an option. Thanks!
I only have a single key. Same worries.....I attached a Tile tracker to it so I feel pretty safe I won't lose it......
problem with the crystal key is that there's no way to attach anything to it. You would have to use some pouch which is what im trying to avoid. I did the tile with another car i had and it was a good solution
What I've absorbed is that owners can add keys w/o a code reader or other electronic assistance if you have two working keys. Most used keys for sale don't have the key code, so they can't be added by any normal means, including an AMDS system. But if you have two working keys, you don't even need AMDS or a code reader to add a 3rd (or 4th or 5th).
My second key came with a card that looks a lot like what a parking lot attendant uses to keep track of what keys go to which cars. If it is a valid key code and someone has a functional key that doesn't have a code, I would be willing to meet at Velocity AP (closest AMDS to me) and allow my key to be coded to another car, giving the owner what is needed to add a 3rd key. Of course, I would only do this if it didn't affect my key / car combo. My second key is a perfect crystal key, so sending it away to be used in this manner is not on offer. Velocity is a 400 mile round trip, so some gas money would also be nice.
It would be really cool if you could then delete the loaned 2nd key, moving the 3rd key up to position #2, gaining the ability to add keys without any help of any sort.
