Steering defective workshop merry xmas :-(

Hi guys im new to the forum any help would be great as im at my witts end story goes i bought a gt about 5 weeks ago and already have what i think was a major issue .

The car has i think de-mobilized itself some how i kept getting a sporadic steering defective workshop light most mornings but id read somewhere this is normally down to low battery and as the car had been standing for a few weeks prior to me buying it i thought i wouldreplace the batteries and it would solve the problem

2 days after replacing the batteries the light come on again when i entered the vehicle i tried starting it and it would not turn at all i then tried the 2nd battery method of starting still nothing

At the moment the car is stuck in Park with the electric handbrake on i also cannot get into the cars Ecu with my vag software as the ignition wont turn on so access is not available

My first thoughts was it must be the kessy module so i took this out from the passenger footwell and sent it to autotronics who repair kessys in the midlands they sent it back having checked it over and its all fine .

Im now thinking it could be the steering column actuator or module does anybody have any experience with this type of job ?

I have seen a 2nd hand one on ebay that looks okay for £290 but im thinking it will have to be coded in with Vas or VCDS ? also if the 2nd hand column has an internal code will i need that code as well before i code it into my vehicle ?

Other than that i may have to bite the bullet admit defeat and get it lifted to Bentley where they will replace everything with new and charge me the price of a small mortgage

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Mark

Hi Mark.

My best advice if you get totally stuck is to have a chat with my Indy. He's in Crewe, not very far from you. There is nothing this guy doesn't know about these cars and a few members on here will thoroughly recommend him. Those same people will also tell you to avoid the main stealer like the plague.
If you Google GT Services in Radway Green, Crewe you will find him.

Good luck and Merry Christmas.

Les.

+1 For Ivor at GT Services.

Your symptoms are not something iv seen or heard of before but if anyone can fix it, its him and your probably only 30 minutes from him.

As you are already aware the dealer will charge a fortune and there is no guarantee their work will even resolve the problem properly.

I have this problem with mine, an old thread I know but maybe some new info...
I connected vcds soft ware to my Bentley and by switching and holding the key in start position, it was the only way the I managed to get the software to talk to it, I kept holding it in start whilst software did it's thing.. I went in to start authorise and it shows a fault code regarding steering control which I cleared and released the key.. The car then started no problem.. It started again a few times no problems but after a while it went back to steering defective contact workshop and fault returned.. Reading around the net this seems a common tourag and porsche problem also and seems to be associated with the electronic steering lock which also activates the immobiliser.. Will look further into this over next few days, but wondered if anyone has gotten to the other side of this, I'm UK based for info

This is not everyone's cup of tea. When I had this issue in an A8, I bought and installed this: https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256804498203869.html and it worked. I have seen it used when a steering column was replaced (to avoid trying to reprogram the electronic steering lock) in a 2005 CGT. Obviously, this is a workaround and both more of a last ditch fix for most people and a hands on operation to install. Just throwing the information out there. Best luck.

I have ordered a evl repair kit from alliexpress as I am having this issue.. Comprises of two relays and new motor.. You can order the evl by pass board but you have to switch over the original micro chip from your own board onto the replacement if you choose that route... Will keep updated as I trawl through it

I had the same issue and searched the net well after researching I came to the conclusion to change out the steering sensor and basically it's one whole unit under the column wasn't to bad then you have recalibrate your steering wheel because that all has to come off as well but it's a a motor that seems to get stuck and basicallly will burn a chip in a sensor its aa common problem my GT only has 37k so its not even broken in but its definitely an issue rhat sooner or later you will have to address it because other than replacing the entire unit i couldnt find a way to bypass or make sure it was rhe problem i couldn't connect my Scanner because the obd2 wouldnt send power for the codes thus locked in limp mode

Hi,

I now have the same issue on a 2012 UK (RHD) Continental GT W12. Car drove fine yesterday, parked it in the garage. Went to start it today and got the 'steering lock contact dealer' message. No water ingress anywhere as the car has been garaged for the last 6 months I've owned it, battery is fine as it sits on charge and battery test results are good.

It's not the key, as I have tried the 2 spare ones too.

I can't get VCDS to connect as ignition will not turn on. I have tried holding key in start position, turning on hazard lights, full beam, pressing brake pedal etc as other online advice has suggested. Nothing seems to enable VCDS to connect to car.

Can't open the bonnet as passenger door is against the wall.

I can half open the drivers door.

How easy is it to remove the steering lock module whilst it is in the 'locked' position and is there a DIY video anywhere please?

Thanks,
Naz.

After a load of fiddling around I somehow managed to get the car started.

Found this in the Bentley Workshop Manual...

♦ To keep the Comfort CAN-Bus awake and so to communicate with the control unit, the hazard lights should be operated in the following way:
♦ The switch should be set to ON for 60 seconds then OFF and immediately ON for 60 seconds. (Repeat for required dura tion). Ignition key position instructions should still be followed.
♦ The above hazard light operation only applies while ignition supply is not available.

Took a few tries but eventually VCDS managed to communicate with the car. Key was in the ignition, but no lights on the dash. Once I cleared all faults the car started fine and steering wheel unlocked.
