I'm guessing this is not correct? When the shifter is moved out of the Park position should the black surround plate fill the space above the shifter? Currently I can see down into the shifter linkage.

search the forum for "plastic shifter slider thing" 'British' supplied a valid link for a replacement part for `$60!! Unless i'm confused of your issue. Johnny even posted how-to pics on the replacement procedure.
I bought one, haven't installed it yet, but it looks identical to the Bentley part.

So is the forward slider broken or missing? I can't feel a piece up under the forward console area.

 

The slider dust cover is one piece, not front or rear, you may be able to disassemble yours and glue it, being it broke clean off as it appears, or just replace the piece as listed.
As far as not feeling it, it is probably all the way down in it's slot.

Will give it a go, but seems to be a fairly big task to disassemble the centre console.
