2013 Boxster S - Question
2013 Boxster S - Question
I just picked up my first Porsche - A 2013 Boxster S.
Loving the car but hoping for another 40 - 50 hp without forced induction.
I've seen several chips, exhaust, and power kits, but it appears most are good for about 20 - 25 hp boost. Anyone aware of anything on the market that's good for roughly 350 hp? My understanding is the base 911 has the same engine and puts out 355hp.
Is there anything on the market that'll get me there right out the box? This car would be a dream with a bump in power.

Congratulations! I'm curious to know why you think you need an additional 50HP. I've owned 400 and 500 HP cars and for my money, the 981 S is as near perfect a sports car I have owned/driven. To each their own. Good luck with your quest to bump-up your 981 S.
Not a knock on the car as it's balance is second to none, and my primary reason for purchasing the car.
To be clear I'm not looking to turn this into a drag car, thus why I'm staying away from forced induction. I love the wail of the 3.4, and don't want to do anything to disturb that instant throttle response. But another 50 under the hood would go a long way to help this feel more up to par.
Well I'm coming from an 832 HP Viper, so the Boxster is quite tame to my seat of the pants. My DD is a P31 C63 AMG, so stepping from that to the Boxster is a stark contrast. Love the balance of the Boxster, but in comparison to even rather run of the mill sports cars, it's a tad bit low on hp.

I have a 987 boxster s, with Fabspeed 200c high-flow cats, remus exhaust, IPD race plenum w/ GT3 TB, FVD DME tune... factory air filter, and my car dyno'ed at 297whp FWIW.
To go big... look for a thread here (or google) for a 981 boxster (base) with a 991S 3.8 transplant - that will give you 400hp (+85hp). ~$20k + car to BGB in Florida.
BTW, why do I keep seeing people say FI is for drags strips, when many LMP cars are turbocharged?

Welcome and Congrats on the purchase viperbl1
Would love to see a few pictures when you get a chance.

Intrigued - What were the baseline #'s before the modifications? I'd be happy with RWHP in this range as a starting point.

See this throws me off a bit, but maybe I'm misinformed. Is not the latest 911 base putting out 355hp with a 3.4? Or is there more going on there? I'd be happy with those numbers for now. Perhaps I'd be better off with a motor swap? haha
UPDATE:
After a week and a half with the vehicle, here are my thoughts:
Pros:
The car is a dream to drive - Absolutely feels like it was built from the ground up to be driven, and forces you to find excuses to keep driving. Not sure what it is - Can't quite put my finger on it - But there is an intangible quality that just "clicks" with this car. Love it.
- Car gets a lot more attention that I thought it would. Shocked how many people do double-takes, and speed up to get a closer look. Funny thing is what I've caught most people staring at is the rims. I snagged the 20 inch Carrera style that look perfect with the body style IMHO - I guess others agree because people cannot seem to look away. Didn't expect this.
- The red top is controversial. Personally I love the red top with the silver body. But it seems to be a love it or hate it color combo. A few have come right out and asked "why did you get a red top?" But personally don't care as I love it.
- The red leather interior looks "right" with the silver exterior. I was originally worried it'd be a bit too much - But after sitting behind the wheel for a few hours this past week I am glad I went with red. Porsche nailed the interior on this thing. It looks high end without looking pretentious. Everything feels quality - More so than my C63.
Cons
- The stereo is a bit of a step back from the Mercedes, despite the fact I upgraded fro the base sound system and opted for the next step up Bose. A bit of speaker rattle. May have to replace this soon
- The exhaust isn't too pleasing. I SHOULD have grabbed the sport exhaust! (Banging head) - Had several people call it "wimpy" - Though it does perk up when hitting higher revs on the highway. But too subdued and I have to strain to hear it even with the stereo off. Wind noise is enough to drown it out, which is ashame because I love the sound of intake combined with the wail at 8,500 rpms. Needs to be louder and a bit more aggressive. Can't believe I didn't get the sport exhaust!!!! Get it, get it, get it if you're in the market!
- Blind spots - Ok so this is a nitpick, but blind spots suck. All the more reason to drop the top though, so I cannot harp too much on this.
- Needs more power. This is pure opinion, and for all intents and purposes it has plenty and is a blast to drive. But since I'm a little jaded due to spending 3/4 my driving life with 500 - 800hp cars, I really don't like worrying about a 370Z outrunning me. With that said, even though it's down on power, the car makes up for it in so many other ways I cannot fault it too much. It's beautifully balanced.
Overall: I give this car a 9 out of 10. It's such a blast, looks phenomenal, and begs to be driven. Turns little runs to the store into a game of "how long can I string this drive out?" I'm definitely going to be in the market for another Porsche soon if the Boxster is any indicator of what to expect.

Yep with you on all of this
The blind spot is worse in the Boxster than the Cayman but both have it. Of course when the top is down you won't have any issues.
The new 981s look amazing. I've had people mistake mine for a Ferrari and also 911 before heh.
I agree with the power the S moves but still needs more torque and just a bit more. The engine is the same as the base 911. It's detuned ecu and a smaller throttle body and air plenum. There are some threads on planet 9 about it. Apparently the 997 TB is the one to use. An ECU tune is expected soon. These should get the car to at least be back at the 911 levels.
Beyond that the fact that you didn't get a sport exhaust might be a good thing. I have it and enjoy it but even that is not super loud. I had a Borla on my 986 before and it was too much for me. Too obnoxious. I have a friend here who has a Borla on his new 981 Boxster and it sounded pretty good. Very loud tho. I'd also check out Fabspeed. Their exhaust and headers etc will make it sound exotic. I've been tempted to out Fabspeed headers on my car but being in CA that's a no-no and I haven't quite decided if I want to do that and/or spend the $$
Enjoy!
