Bike Carrier Suggestions - roof or hitch?

How do you all carry bikes around in your Cayennes? I have roof rails so I could load a couple of bikes up there but am worried about scratching the car. Anyone have experience with how hard it is to load? Am not so worried about myself doing it as I am about my wife and kids trying to load the roof. Should I go porsche product or Thule or Yakima?

Another option is a trailer hitch mount - unfortunately, I dont have a factory installed trailer hitch. Suncoast sells one aftermarket but it is pretty pricy ($999 before installation). If I go that route any suggestions on hitch mounts?

I'm looking into this... a little pricey but great reviews and super simple to use!

I haven't looked into hitches yet but I'd suspect there are universal ones that'd fit as well. Keep us posted on what you find.

If you plan to drive any distance, and in particular if you plan to drive on mountain roads I'd recommend the hitch approach.

If you do the hitch take a look at the Yakima Highlight rack - I've had a lot of these over many years and this one is far and away the best (and lightest). I carry two bikes often and feel no need to change my lawless ways on mountain roads. No rocking at all. Very nice

I use an hitch mount carrier and it works very well. The bike doesn't move, the hitch doesn't rattle, and the bike can't scratch the car.

I've used both. Hitch-mounted rack is the way to go. Another reason to never put your bike on a roof rack - never having to second-guess when pulling into the garage. It's ugly when your bike frame gets trashed, pulled out of the roof mount, and scratches you pig's paint job on the way down

Looks like the hitch mount is the way to go...as I suspected. I was sort of hoping someone would tell me roof was great since that solution is about $1k cheaper but deep down I knew. Just wish I had ordered the hitch to begin with as it is $600 when added at the factory and $1500 between parts and labor afterward.

Thanks for the tips.

After extensive research, I just bought the Kuat NV. Great reviews. Here's a link: http://kuatinnovations.com/products/bike/the-nv/

Not cheap but supposed to be worth it.
